This latest shutdown of the list is a poignant example of why Larry getting out of the list mod business is a good thing.
These kinds of tantrums that he has from time-to-time are really silly, and do nothing except make him look petty and childish. I'm afraid that he just takes the concept of "moderating" the email list too seriously sometimes. The condescending remarks and unpleasantness directed at people on the list in increasing frequency for the past year or so have illustrated this, so handing off the "moderation" of the email list is probably in both Larry's, and the list's best interests.
In all reality, an email list requires just about zero moderation, with the exception of simple things like keeping away spammers and rip-off artists. It's an email list for cripes sake. It's like an electronic version of a big group of people sitting at a bar -- there are going to be cliques, and laughs, and stupid disagreements, but no blood is shed and by the end of the night nobody remembers what the **** the issue was to begin with. Nobody is "in charge" if the same disagreement were to happen at a real bar, so trying to be "in charge" in the email version is not a terribly productive use of one's time.
If Larry truly felt it necessary to moderate content, then he should have set it up as a forum instead.
Before anyone makes any assumptions or reads anything into what I've said here, understand that I like Larry and consider him a friend. But, it's obvious to me that his tenure running the V8SHO website and list has burned him out, and this has resulted in spurts of consternation amongst members about silly, insignificant things. I applaud and thank him for his efforts and accomplishments. I know it hasn't been easy for him. Turning over the list to someone else was the right thing to do and I hope it allows him to relax a little more. I hope he considers doing the same with the website too since the content there, while extensive and informative, has become poorly organized and difficult to navigate -- especially for new people. Hopefully he'll be able to find a volunteer with more time and a knack for website design, and finally be able to wake up one day worrying about nothing more on the V8SHO website or email list except what size his gas tank is.
