A V8 motor swap has been in the back of my mind ever since I sold my 98 SHO and when I almost spun a bearing in my V6, I missed the sound of the V8 also. Of course like I said I want to see how much I can get out of my V6 before I do anything but I am going to start looking for a Continental now and compare subframes and do some more research. I have plenty of storage at my garage so I can start gathering parts and see what happens.

I just read the lvsc forum, and they say the continental had a DOHC 4.6. That's even better! I'm not real savvy with the mod motors, but you might be able to put Terminator or MachI heads on it and get a nice polished kennebelle blower. That would be really sick! At least I think so. But it would require a little research. I wish you lived a little closer because I would like to have a hand in this project if you do go for it. Anyways, good luck, good night and big balls.

People have dropped continental engines/transmissions into Taurus bodies before.

Found this with a quick search:
http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/archive/index.php/t-10287.html

I could have sworn someone in the community had done this swap, ran it a few times, then considered it to be way too front heavy. Can't find the info offhand though.

There was a crosspost on Taurus Car Club of America about a Conti-swapped Gen3, the subframe, engine and transmission was swapped in. It fit, barely, don't see how you could feasibly service anything and ultimately, this and several other complications caused the project originator to sell the vehicle, in a non-running condition, the new owner of the project was never heard from.

If you take a SHO, remove the Yamaha V6 and install a Ford 4.6 you will no longer have a SHO no matter what the emblem or cladding say. It would be a sacrilege! Just get yourself a GL and go to town.

The same could be said about doing something a lot of people do as lame and played out as taking a crate smallblock chevy and cramming it into every ford(and whatever else) they can find('30s hotrods, mustangs)simply because its cheaper to get parts. BLAAAHHH!!! At least you're kinda keeping it in the family by using lincoln stuff. I know the Yamaha motors are what make the SHOs special but depending on who you ask and where you look, its half ford, all ford, all yamaha, part porche or whatever. Lincolns are closer than anyone else.
Now, if he says he's gonna use a 5.3 from an impala....I'll hunt him down myself;)

I am thinking I might end up going with the Gen 3 SHO, I am a little concerned with the weight difference between the 4.6 and the 3.4. I think the 4.6 may be too heavy up front on a gen 2 SHO.

To be honest I am not that concerned with people thinking it won't be a SHO without the SHO motor, as far as I am concerned whatever I decide it will be better than what is in there and I would never put anything other than a Ford motor in there.

The 4.6 would be massively heavier over the 3.4 and wouldn't be the ideal choice especially of you have the tendency to drive spiritedly through the twisties or autoX. Also for a DD, the 3.4 would get better mileage. But if you drag raced a lot, the power to weight the 4.6 has the potential to offer in terms of torque, it may be the better choice. Plus the unique factor.
If I were to do the 4.6 swap, I would look at maybe adapting a Mach I block because they're aluminium and of course, lighter. Or just make it rwd. Maybe put my bull in a cage with a cobra and see what happens:). Maybe a bullsnake would result....
Anywho, good luck with the swap! Any power adders?
And bravo for stickin with a Ford motor! Why would anyone take something as cool as a '49 Merc with a flattie and put in chevy crate from Jegs?

I am still thinking about it, it pretty much comes down to if I find a Gen 3 donor car for decent money. I found one at the auction a few weeks back but it wouldn't start so I passed on it. I am definately looking for a project for the winter so we will see what happens. Time is another factor, I don't want to sit on a project for too long and lately I have been so busy at my shop I don't even have time to do work on my own cars.

Weren't you talking about taking that pretty green one and doing an MTX swap on it? Not saying the 3.4 swap can't be done. But given what you say about your time, I would think the 3.2 MTX swap would be enough of a project. And probably not as costly, and it would pretty much just bolt it up without a bunch of fancy modifications. Just my .02.

I always wanted to do a 3.4 swap mainly because it's something different and I love the sound of the V8 3.4, I know there is no performance gain and there might even be a performance loss. If I did do the swap it would definately involve a 5 speed conversion as well. I am very busy at the moment so I doubt it will happen however if I ever find a cheap Gen 3 donor car I will most likely do it.
