I have a bone stock 89 MTX that has been cared for very well. The vehicle had the 60k done at 75k, water pump, timing chain, etc. I noticed my car burns 1quart every 5k miles and it has about 105k on the clock. Is this bad news? I checked for oil leaks and there is a VERY small amount in the plug wells but nothing to get upset about. I do need to replace the rear main when I put my new clutch in but that has nothing to do with oil. Please help guys.

1 quart every 5,000 miles or 500 miles? If 5,000, then you have a very good running engine. If it is 500 miles then that does seem to be a little excessive. Keep in mind that some of the leaks on the SHO engine doesn't always result in drips on the garage floor. My front main is leaking and burning off before it ever hits my floor. Also, if the rear main is leaking, it DOES have to do with oil.

Huh? The rear main seal is an oil seal, and if that's leaking that can account for some oil loss. I don't know that most people would even notice burning a quart every 5K since most change their oil more frequently than that anyway.

It's probably nothing to worry about. When the time comes for the 120K service, have the cam seals (especially the one on the rear exhaust cam where the CID sensor is) checked/replaced.

My car uses about a quart every 1,000 miles. It should be less now that the valve cover leak has been plugged and I made myself a new gasket for the throttle body after running without one for quite a while. I'm slowly but surely plugging everything up :)
