As for the urgency, all it causes is a CHECK ENGINE light. The non-California 3.0L engines have no EGR so it doesn't hurt not to have it. It is for emissions purposes only.
As for correcting the problem, search the Forum for the pictures and description for cleaning the EGR nostrils. This is most likely the cause. To get to them, you need to remove the throttle body from the manifold. That requires that you remove the cruise control and throttle linkages from the throttle shaft (no tools) and unbolt the two screws and two bolts that secure the TB to the intake. You also need to loosen the 8mm hose clamp on the intake hose a the TB and unclip the two filiter lid clips to remove the filter lid and intake hose. Very few tools required. If it's not the nostrils that are plugged, either the EGR pressure sensor (DPFE) or EGR valve is malfunctioning.
