Upgrading Fuel Pump and Pickup System

After removing and examining the Taurus fuel pickup I discovered a few things.

Ford is F'ing crazy!

This poor car sucks fuel through a small pickup with a small rubber stopper on the bottom of the plastic can that the pump is screwed into.

There is a secondary fuel pickup tube that accesses a fuel source, but its like secondary.... Real strange, and amazingly complicated....

I purchased a 110 lph Walbro to replace it, but its of the 97 mustang type, which is slightly different. Mainly a metal nippled pickup tube, instead of plastic and smooth.

After studying it, I made a decision to modify it to bring in massively more fuel.

First I ditched the secondary fuel pickup that goes to the outside plastic can and directly connected the fuel pickup to the fuel pump.

I then drilled large 1/2 holes all around the plastic can to allow fuel to come into the area where the fuel pump is.

I inserted the fuel pump into the plastic cover, and used JB Weld epoxy to secure it for good.

If anyone has any input, please post it as I am close to bolting everything back in...

The OEM pump is not a restriction unless you are using NOS or a pressurized intake. There is also a lot of fuel coming back into the module from the fuel rail.

I took down the fuel tank from my '96 and pumped out the fuel in it by hot wiring the fuel pump. Unpressurized it delivered a liter of fuel in ~20 seconds @ 12V.

That was a very stupid thing to do. The fuel canister is designed that way to keep the fuel pump constantly submerged in fuel to cool it. By drilling the bottom out, the canister will not have fuel in it when the tank is low, and you are going to burn up your pump.

The secondary tube is the fuel return line.

Well, now it resembles my SVO's fuel system and every other GT Mustang system.

Fuel pump sitting in the tank by itself inside the plastic can.

I didn't remove the secondary tube (fuel return line) but the secondary fuel pickup attached to the plastic tank...

Pretty restrictive setup, but not anymore.

Fuel pressure tests and those with wideband O2 sensors (like myself) have proven multiple times that the stock fuel setup is more than sufficient for the engine.

Why did you put in a SMALLER volume pump?

110 LPH?

IIRC factory is higher than that.


FWIW - I'm running a 255 LPH pump to 42# injectors in the stock canister. No holes. It has not been a problem moving enough fuel through it.

110LPH is still sufficient for a stock car. Using a gas density of 6.15 lb/gallon, the stock injectors running at 100% duty cycle need only a ~94LPH pump.

Isn't the stock Taurus sho pump like 87 lph?

110 lph won't overwhelm the factory reg either.

I got the car started, runs great. beast $500 car I ever bought!

I'm now waiting for a new SHO nose bumper to finish her off...
