So today i just receieved my ALSFB (decided to go with them obviously) AND shipped my tranny out to Bizzy for the rebuild, im getting very excited to finally getting my SHO back on the road and just thought id update my progress...

Ive got ALSFB here (with a recall kit), a spec stage II clutch on the way, new rod bearings and oil pan gasket (in the car), New thermostat, and the rebuilt tranny coming....

i still need an alternator... looking at bout 80-100 from autozone (i wish i didnt need the 130 amp one... the other MTX alternators are a dime a dozen)

Luke if you read this, hows your car coming?

Dan,
If you need an alternator I would suggest buying a new one. They usually come with lifetime warranties. Unless you can get one for $20 I would just buy a new one.

If you buy one from Autozone, Checker, Advance Auto, etc.

GET IT TESTED BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE STORE!

I ended up putting three alternators in my old red 92 in a week because they were bad right from leaving the store! :nut:

well its hard for me to say... i sent it to bizzy for a reseal/reinforced... heres what she found...

Bizzy said:
I worked on your trans this afternoon. There are a few concerns that you need to address before I go any further with it.

This trans has been open before. Whoever opened it sealed it back with black RTV. That's a big no-no in tranny land because it hardens (rubbery hard) inside the case (when the case halves are put together it squeezes some on the inside and outside) and eventually the rubbery pieces make their way up into the gear shafts which plug the oiling holes in the shafts.

I noticed when opening the trans that it was sealed with RTV so I knew that there would be some extra cleaning I'd have to do to it in order for it to be 100%. I also noted that the trans was stuck in gear, I wasn't able to put it into neutral prior to opening the case, but it wasn't any real big deal because it happens sometimes. It's just easier to disassemble when it's in neutral. However, why it was stuck in gear is another story.

In this picture you can see where the RTV was squeezed out on the inside of the case. You can also see RTV pieces near the bearing race in the top half of the case.

When I disassembled the main gear shaft I found that RTV had indeed worked it's way up into the shaft and had completely plugged the oiling holes for 3rd gear, 3/4 synchro and blocking rings and 4th gear. The bearing also has RTV stuck in it, however it doesn't look to be damaged and can be cleaned out with no problem.

The 3/4 synchro is toast. You also have all brass blocking rings so this trans is originally out of an 89 SHO. The 3/4 synchro has burrs on it from not being oiled properly so it can't be reused. This is also why the trans was stuck in gear. The lack of oiling has also caused some damage to the blocking rings as well.

This actually has to be one of the largest masses I've ever removed from a gear shaft in my years of rebuilding.

One of the rivets that holds the ring gear on is damaged. I'm not sure what caused this damage, I don't see in a large pieces of metal anywhere inside. It would take a LOT to do this kind of damage to a rivet, they're very hard. This won't cause any problems, but I wanted you to be aware of it.

eh i edited alot of the fluff out... but basically she said she was surprised that it didnt blow already... and that was surprised that it shifted before...

no hard feelings though... bizzy's taking care of it i just wanted to know if you had opened it or not and maybe you knew why the rivet was damaged (probably the same reason it was opened up)

Dan, I got that transmissions from a car that was being put back together. The previous spent a lot of time swaping motors etc... to get the car back on the street. He didnt have the time to finish and I wanted it for parts so I bought it and parted it out. That trans hasnt been in a running car for years, but both I and the previous owner thought it was still good. Anyways Im sorry you ran into some problems but Im glad you/Bizzy found them before the tranny blew.

Friday afternoon I removed the catless and installed the stock one. Ran to emissions and passed. I washed the car while it was cooling off and then removed the stock one and put the catless back on. It took me 30 minutes to pull the stock one off and put the catless back on. I guess when you do a dozen times you get good at it.

Mike how much do you want for the stock y-pipe? I think I might want to keep it.

yeah ive got the tranny back... waiting on the clutch... as i was replacing the rear main seal i found out that i have to remove the oil pan again to get the backing plate or some piece off, got that done...

now i have to reseal the oil pan and buy 5 more qts of oil...

kinda ran into trouble with my flywheel too... i broke two of the pins off, left the thrid and found out that the shop takes them out while resurfacing... drilled the two pins out and the 1/4" pins i bought dont fit  (too big of holes) now i have to figure out what im gonna do with that... i was thinking coldweld, but someone said that would throw off the balance of the flywheel... idk...
