So this morning, I start up the SHO to go to class. 5 mins into my drive, the check engine light comes on. I pull to the nearest parking lot to turn off the engine. I let the car sit for 10 mins and start it up again. The check engine light is now off. I give it a couple wide open throttle runs and the light stays off. Is it just a fluke that it came up? Thanks

If the light was on a code was set. Check the code with a short piece of wire and the following info. My bet is an O2 sensor, but let the EEC tell you which one.

I had that happen to me twice. The first time it came on, I pulled over the highway. Shut off ignition, waited 3-5 minutes then started, light went off. Car drove like normal for a week and a half. The second time that happened it was fatal--tow truck bill and new fuel pump!

Why do you guys guess at what caused the CE light when it is so simple to find out the real answer? It's not a test. You are given the answers.

Well in my case, will I find out what code is wrong even though the light turned off? Or will a code only appear when the light is on?

If the CHECK ENGINE light blinks on for even a split second, a code has been set and you can retrieve it. The EC light is your friend. Listen to him.

Scott is correct the answer is right there behind door #3. If you "guess" then you will be considered a "Nerd" and shame will follow you throughout your sho life!

Mine did this about a year ago. After starting up and driving away about 5 minutes into the ride it came on. I pulled over and did what everyone else did, shut it off and start it up. Never came on the entire ride home. It did it again about one month later. The pattern then was, if it was cold out and I just started and drove away (no warmup) it would do this. But, it hasn't done it again in over a year, so???? I say in my case, just a fluke. Maybe with cold engine computer trying to compensate with richer mixture, but at the same time it's warming up needing less fuel to air. Car ran excellent through all this.

The EEC program is not in the closed loop mode until the engine and catalyst have warmed up to a certain temperature. The closed loop mode is when the emissions are being handled by the EEC programming and inputs from all of the engine sensors. Before that, the engine operates on a pre-set map of engine control parameters and emits more HCs and NOs that would pass the emissions test limits. Out of the closed loop mode, the car runs richer, producing more emission and mildly lower fuel economy.

I ALWAYS give my car at least one minute to get going. I usually just wait until the idle settles down to about 900-1000. It takes as long as it takes.
