Hey everyone, im thinking of putting a turbo into my 89 SHO. Its not going to be for a while, but i'd like some pretty serious numbers. Ive seen videos of 450 whp SHOs and I would like to be in that range. How much do you guys think this will cost? And do you have to custom make a turbo kit? Im guessing Ill need a whole new exhaust too. (Anything I should know you can tell me)
:thankyou:

Just a few lines under the create new thread button is a all caps sticky thread that reads " TURBO SHO HOW-TO " which is only one of the many threads that answer your questions . ( many many many more can be found through a search )

Or just wait til shosource gets a kit ready for resale .

Simple answer: Turbo kits cost 5-6 grand.

either that, or you do a **** of alot of the work yourself and learn how to source quality used parts and such

I figure I have about 3-4K in my turbo setup.
It took about 1.5 years to gather all the parts and piece it together myself.
Things that really saved me $ were building my own exhaust and buying used components like the turbo, waistgate,BOV.
Lots of little things like header wrap, nuts and bolts, gaskets, ext. add up as you assemble everything.

5-6k seems like a lot for a turbo kit....i guess its all custom though....i wonder if they will just sell hot pipes thats the only real challenge i can see in my brain...plus all the cash you need to put into the car to handle that power suspension, brakes and clutch i can think of another couple grand right there :woo-hoo: i would like to see it in the 3 or 3.5k range bolt on but thats prolly a pipe dream :laugh_ti: just my view on it

i had about 1500 in mine.

toolman pipes 300
used turbo 360
WG- 100
Bov- 50
IC kit 160
etc- 500

Now, i already had a 80mm maf and tweecer with a 155lph fuel pump. So doing things that can be used for n/a and boost are good to get out of the way before you start the build.

you can run the stock fuel system with a pump upgrade to about 5psi (280whp)

the 5-6k statement is loosely based on the idea of "if you have to ask, you cant afford it"

in the case of turbocharging, if you have to ask, you most likely don't have the experience / knowledge to do it yourself.

My first turbo build was a 3g eclispe w/ 1g/2g turbo parts, which are rather cheap. everything except the tune was done in my driveway, and it still cost $2000 - $2500 or so by the time it was done.

it also only made 210hp on 9psi, using a SAFC II for tuning (along w/ a remapped innovative wideband [replacing the stock narrow band] to lie to the ecu about the AFR)

On a related note, I'm thinking of putting a turbo system from a Starion/Conquest on my '89 Montero, which shares the same engine (2.6L). I have a line on what I think are most of the hard parts that I'll need, and I can get the following list of parts for about $400:

Exhaust Manifold
Turbo
Piping
FMIC
Ecu
Wire Harness "ecu side"
Intake Manifold
Mass Air Sensor
Throttle Body
Injectors
Injector resistor

Mind you, the 2.6L in my Monty has a 2-barrel carb, probably puts out a little over 100hp, is slow as all get out, and only gets 15mpg. I'd like to get maybe another 25-35 hp by getting this turbo system from the Starion/Conquest installed on my Monty, without taking a hit in mpg. Based on that parts list, do I have everthing I need, or are some parts missing? Keep in mind we're talking 80s-era turbo technology, which I'm perfectly fine with, since I just want to give it enough hp to accelerate and merge into freeway traffic, without taking half a mile to do it.

For example, in making the switch from carbed to FI, will I need a new fuel pump? Will my gauges still work properly by switching to FI?
