the only advantage i had, ebay sells a turbo hot pipe set for 200 dollars(tubular headers, hotpipe, and downpipe).

SS? I ask because 304 mandrel bent pipe is not cheap. Even before you by a single ****** (let alone V-band connections, GOOD ones, not the $30 chinese parts), the hot pipes for a SHO would be over $200 just in 304 (let alone 321, which is MUCHO!).

I have said it a thousand times, if you want RELAIBLE HP, it costs money. Even with used parts, duplicating a setup such as mine is going to cost some money, and that is STRICTLY for the turbo related parts (turbo, oil lines, FMIC, WG, BOV, boost controller, hot and charge pipes, silicone hoses, etc). Then you have the other MANDATORY components such as fuel upgrades, injectors, MAF, tuning device. And you are still left needing forged pistons, a Quaife, oil filter relocation, brakes, suspension. Sure, if you are dead set on building an affordable turbo SHO, and you have a very limited budget, it can be done. But it will not be all that it can be (in the Army)!

Yeah, it can be done much cheaper with used parts. But, the fella is asking for a kit. A kit needs to be reproduceable, and have everything a person needs to complete said project. Normally a person asking for a kit doesn't have all the fabrication skills necessary to build their own.

If a vendor of any sort wants to be reputable and have repeat business, they need their kit to be replicable and consistant. The only way to do this, and the only way that makes good business sense, is to offer all new parts. This, of course, is SO much more expensive than taking your time, buying a couple of used parts here and there, etc. Comparing a true "kit" to a home-built, budget setup like you described and their cost isn't fair at all.

Exactly, and a F/I "kit" that includes everything for $4k is a bargain. Then add in the supporting mods (brakes, diff/tranny, suspension) you should have and you're quickly approaching $10,000, which is still a bargain. In fact $10,000 is no where close to enough to properly built a F/I SHO that stops, turns, and goes reliably.

That's using new parts obviously.

As with most things with these cars (besides how much the actual car costs...), ya gotta pay to play.
Someone said it best not too long ago, the car itself is only a rolling storage for the parts on the vehicle.

What do you have that makes up that $2700?

Got any of these?

Fuel Pump
FPR
Injectors
MAF
MAF Adaptor
MAF Harness [OBD-I to OBD-II]
Couplers/Clamps
BOV
Wastegate
Piping
Turbo
Intake Filter
Oil Lines w/fittings

Just wondering. Not saying it's impossible because I have quite a bit for the same price, but not turbo parts.
I have the bov, my turbo is internally wastgated , got fuel pump oil lines and fittings. I got all but injectors and fpr. I have an intercooler but i may get a bigger one. I do have the cheap v-band connectors toolman sorry. I mean i have a 60 trim t4 . By no means are my parts even close to the best not claiming that at all. Just saying it can be done. Thats all im saying. If i had 10k to dump in it would i cut corners, no but since i dont i am using good vs best as far as parts. My hats off to you toolman your setup is way more superior to mine. But im not looking to build the fastest or most powerful SHO but i do want something a little quicker than what it is. Before anyone says anything i do have n2o but its going on another car.

By all means build it, run it, and post pics and stuff! Do what you can with what you got.

its not like any of us said oh i have 10K laying around lets dump it into my SHO. the 10K is usually a result of several years. 2 years ago i bought suspention, then brakes, then hood, then turbo. i put probably 2-3K in my car each year if you were to average it out. including repairs and transmissions.

I think someone outta just make a kit. Group buy option it and see what happens. I'd be up for one if it was less than $3000. Even with a good used turbo, I myself would be happy.

its realy NOT that easy

a $4000+ HONDA turbo kits is MUCH MUCH easier to fab. the engine bay simply isnt FULL like it is on the sho

due to the tight constraints of the sho engine bay, the fabbed pipes have to be dead on, theres very little tolerance for error. and then add in the possibilities of cars that have damaged unit-bodies (even if the current owner doesnt realize it) and your REALY asking for fitemnt problems

LS1 firebirds / camaros have MORE engine bay space, and single turbo kits for those cars are 6K+

somedude_001's car cost 4k in parts to build, and honestly, all my fab work would have cost over 2200, he hes basicly got a 6k kit on his car

1400 for his turbo - 500 for a used one = 900 saved
$125 for his intercooler - not gonna beat that buying new
$200 for his tial bov - $50 for a dsm unit - 150 saved
$200 for his wastegate - get an internaly gated turbo - $200 saved
and lets cut Fab cost in 1/2 - 1000 saved

so thats 2250 saved on the big stuff, making the kit cost 3950

what do you want me to save another 950 on ? if you call accel and ask for a group buy discount on 10 sets of injectors, they basicly **** on your face and tell you its raining.

and honestly, if i personaly was to sell $3500 kits for this car, i probably wouldnt be giving a warranty other then "all the stuff will be in the box when i ship it"

seriously, if you want a $3000 turbo kit, buy your own parts, buy a sawzall, find someone that can weld in your area and works cheap, and go to it. lots of people will work for beer and pizza

So, you have a mecheen shop, are on a rilly tite budget, and don't know where to start whereas most mecheeniss can create or fab something up theirself?

Has got to be a joke! :laugh_ti:

With a smaller boost kit, you shouldn't need an intercooler. Make it known that other parts are needed. My idea was basicly for turbo/plumbing, no tuning or other parts. The turbo, manifold, and plumbing is something that most people here cannot do. They can buy parts and install most, but cannot fabricate. Thats what I was getting at. Sorry to be so vague on my first post, but thats what I get outta reading most of the posts on turbo/s/c. I didnt mean to insult you trubo guys... I know it takes alot of time/money to do it. I just wanted to see if someone could make it easier on the do-it-yourselfer that couldn't fabricate.

I pieced a kit together for my SHO. It cost around 2500$. However, it didn't include any kind of engine/tranny/brake/susp. upgrades. It does have everythhing else. And will shortly be up for sale due to the frustration I've encountered after going to boost. Basically, just a turbo kit alone isnt enough, even if it comes with everything to boost the car and make it work. You need more to have an enjoyable experiance. I suppose if I dropped another 3-4k on upgrades around the vehicle it would be fun. I have a GTO now though, and there's no more sense in having a 3-400hp SHO when it's this much of a hassle. I'll go back to light mods and have big boy fun with the goat.

heres a pic of my "cost effective" setup on my old probe
it uses the stock logs and y pipe,at the union of the y pipe we cut of the ******,ran a "u" bend back towards the front of the car and that created the hot pipe..non intercooled running 5psi on a t3/t4 svo spec'd turbo, the only thing new was the turbo, everything else was used...2.5" open downpipe with plx wideband .....car ran fine like that for a year and a half while i had it...talk to the current owner on ocassion and its still going, only larger injectors and fuel pump now

The amount of time it took to finally get the car running corectly (then it blew a HG) when it did run, on 9psi 1st and 2nd gear were rendered completely useless. It was a monster from a 3rd gear roll, but too many of those and I'll be looking for another tranny. Basically, the car can't use the power, and if it does, things are going to break. Like I said, another 3-4k invested and it would be a blast to drive, and a whole lot more reliable. However, I'll have just as much fun in my GTO, and I'll still have a quick n/a SHO to mess around with people in.

I am about ready to sell both my trucks and drive a sho and have no car payments, and be able to finish my other sho... The thing is if i make a sho with 400 HP and blow it up... it will be aLOT easier and cheaper to fix than blowing up my powerstroke or a newer/faster car.

This is true, but fixing this car is getting old, and a 400hp SHO is alot of fun, but not when you don't put the extra effort in to make it just right. Slapping on a turbo kit and making a ton of power isn't the end of the road. There's 1000's and 1000's of dollars to be spent to make the car worthy of having that much power.
