Hello, I just bought my first sho. It's a 93 mtx, I ordered some accel superstock wires with some autolite iridium plugs. I have done plugs on a few cars but not on the sho. Do you have to pull the intake to do plugs and wires? Or can you sneak your hand back there or go from underneath? I also want to do my fuel filter, I looked in the repair manual, it tells me how to do it but doesn't give me the slightest clue where the filter is, where is it? Also where is the pcv valve and is it hard to replace? Thanks :thankyou:

Don't have to rewmove the intake to do the plugs but it's easier if you do. Do a search. Plenty of postings on removing plugs without removing the intake.

Fuel filter is underneath, passenger side, immediately in front of the rear tire. There are postings on how to change it.

I don't believe these engines have a pcv valve. Somebody I'm sure will correct me if I'm wrong

Theres a PCV system but no valves to replace.

For the plugs and wires , I suggest you remove the intake if you have minimum wrenching skills.

If not , well there can be some swearing in the process.

Saving yourself the hassel and just remove the intake takes no longer than 20min's and you have a chance to check out other stuff that is not otherwise visable with the intake in the way. Happy Finding's!:blah:

yeah but if you remove the intake and have never tried it before.. you might be making another post later about your car not cranking.... sometimes people miss stuff!

Maybe try it without removal first and if you have a problem.. dive in!

It would be easier to pull the intake. You can also do the throttle body bypass to make it easier. Also it is very hard to do the wires with the intake on.

The intake metal gaskets are reusable. There is no extra cost and it saves a lot of time. Sneaking around the top or up from the bottom sounds fine, until you try it.
There is a good chance you will be replacing the valve cover gaskets when you find oil in your spark plug wells... and you definitely have to take the intake off for that.

Can't really do wires with out pulling, or at least lifting the intake. Might as well go all the way, makes it easy.

You can surely reuse the stock metal head-to-intake gaskets. Clean them up then repaint them with some spray paint of your choice (I use flat black). It helps it seal. It's an old school trick. Been doing it for years.

Sorry Matt, but its a DAMN shame to see your car in someone else's sig. As far as the original post, I would be surprised if that car needed a dime of anything but gas and oil for a long time.

Yeah I know, its sad but oh well I enjoy my Crown Vic. The only thing the old SHO really needed is the Valve Cover Gaskets. I think its good that Jr wants to freshen her up a little.

Good job Tucker!

Next time you do just the plugs with the intake on, you will find this tool handy and makes it easier to do. It's the Great Neck 5/8" deep well extended reach spark plug tool from Autozone. Not only is the extension permanently attached and able to swivel, it also has a magnet in the socket to hold the spark plug. Makes getting to those rear plugs a breeze.

i used the snap on spark plug socket for the early mod motor, and a 4 inch extension and had no issue doing plugs and wires with out removing the intake, and in a timely manner. if u have access to this tool, it saves a bunch of time, and is about the same depth as the spark plug well on the sho engine, if u have access to a snap on dealer, it is worth the money. what is this throttle body bypass, and what does it do?

I took the car to my regular mechanic to have the fan fixed, and get the power steering fluid flushed, and he said he checked and said the gaskets were fine (I assume he checked the plug wells). I'll have to take a look when I do the plugs and wires. On a funny note, he wanted about $350-$400 to do the plugs, wires, and fuel filter I think most of that was shop time to pull the intake, but still funny :laugh_ti:

What is this throttle bypass thing about?

Should only take 15 minutes to take that Intake off, seems a little high on what he is charging to do some pretty simple things. The throttle body bypass is removing all the little coolant hoses from the bottom cause they are a pain the rear to deal with when removing the throttle body or when taking off the Intake.

Does it just cool the throttle body? Also does anyone know of a reasonably priced rebuild kit for a 3.2?

You have to piece it together as they don't come with the main bearings. On top of it all, if you don't have to machine the crank and you're stuck trying to track down standard size main bearings, it'll be difficult because they are obsolete.

That was the hardest thing to find during my rebuild but luckily the parts guy at the Ford dealership was able to find two sets in standard size for me a few months ago. I believe they were the last in the Ford dealership inventory. I did place a WTB ad here and no one responded so I don't know what you or anyone else is going to do in the future when they need those bearings.

The coolant running through the throttle body is used to prevent icing, so it acutally warms it up.
