I remember some time ago we had a discussion of being able to open the trunk with the key, instead of with the button on the fob, and pretty much everyone agreed, many after trying it (including me), that the ignition key did not open the trunk.

Well, we were wrong. I had the old girl int o the Ford dealership for half a dozen service and replacement type things the other day, so along the way I finally remembered to tell them the key would not open the trunk. Well, if you soak it for a day in solvent to free up the guts, in fact, the ignition key does work just fine to open it. :)

Also found out that the strange noise I had been getting from what I thought was the transmission was, in fact, a line coming into contact with the Front Strut Tower Brace when the motor moves when placed in reverse and the throttle hit a bit harder than normal. So, end of the worry that the transmission was finally beginning to go at 112,000.

New rear brakes, including rotors too, those having been the originals and starting to get rather flaky. So, the old girl trucks on, and not a single code sitting in the computer. :)

Hmmm, sounds like my lock cylinder needs a good bath in Berryman's.

If your noise was in reverse it was your PS line hitting the FSTB. Our 99 if you back up aggressively you will hear PS pump noise picked up through the FSTB, in Drive under WOT, through most of first gear and on the shift to second the EGR is hitting the bar making noise.

Glad to hear your girl is doing well. I freed up the trunk lock on our 99 about 6 months ago, went to use it today and it is seized up AGAIN!!! Argh...

to clear up you trunk lock, I suggest blowing out the lock with compressed air after you free it with solvent/wd40 or whatever you use. after blowing it out, lubricate with grafite. this doesn't seem to catch dirt in the lock as bad as most oils which causes the lock sticking IMO. 98SHO all locks working.

Yes, Venom, it was the PS line. And I had noticed it a bit in WOT in first also, and mentioned that when I took it in. Mike, my favorite mechanic that always works on my car at the dealership, was very pleased to have found it quickly by just having the wheels off the ground a bit and watching while he had someone hit it in reverse, where it was most obvious. Very glad it was somethig simple.

I am sure the old girl will need transmission work eventually. All moving parts like that wear out over time and miles, but having already done the cam sprokets this year, I am at the budgetted repair amount for her now, so I would like it to happen somewhat later. A lot later would be good. :)

On the trunck lock, it is my suspicion that if you want to keep it working you will have to use it. So, I plan to stop using the fob button all the time and just use the key whenever possible. Graphite lubrication is not a bad thought either, though.

Rust never sleeps... wink

Yeah I tried mine at the time of that post a couple of months ago and it would not open, then I tried it later and it worked, it kinda gave a slight click sound and then opened and has been fine ever since.
