Background. 1995 mtx suddenly developed a bad miss about a month or so ago, and I assumed it to be bad plugs/wires due to there being fresh oil in the number 5 plug hole. Replaced plugs, wires and all the seals and gaskets and the problem remained. I double checked the wire routing against the firing order from this forum so the wires were run correctly. KOEO test gave 551, so I also replaced the IAC unit. That seemed to fix the problem at first, as it ran smoothly but wouldn't idle. After warming up a bit the misfire gradually started coming back and became constant again, and still won't idle. KOEO reads 111 but its showing 157, 216, 528 and 542 in the memory. This is getting a bit frustrating, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

First code is MAF and that can cause poor running. If you unplug the sensor and it runs better (although not as good as normal) that part is an issue. You could also have a vacuum leak somewhere from your work or the routing you did wrong. Yes I read you checked it. Triple check it. SOmetimes we do something wrong and insist it is correct in our brain this also holds true for new purchased parts that don't operate as they should.
I would unplug MAF and see what happens. Then I would check for vacuum leaks, IAC malfunction, and plugs and wire inspection and routing check. Also clear the stored codes and see what pops up that is new from this condition. No way to tell how old stored codes are. See what returns

Reset the codes, started it up and it still has a bad miss. It starts fine, runs rough and won't idle. 542 code is gone but it's still throwing 157, 216 and 528. Starts and runs about the same with the MAF plugged or unplugged, but it's a fairly new MAF, previous owner installed it along with a new TPS and trans/diff.

Huh. Interested in other people chiming in. I would look at the coil, the DIS and PCM if the wires and plugs are good. Trying to remember the ig signal path. I'm thinking pcm-dis-coil.

Looking at all the codes my best 1st guess is pcm as the MAF signal and the pin 10 open in addition to coil 2. Could be wiring ground, I wish I had a DIS schematic to see what goes from there.

Well I just bought a multimeter and a test light, now all I need is a repair manual to make this easier. I'm gonna see if I can find some wiring diagrams and troubleshooting guides somewhere.

Everything I'm hearing and reading seems to be pointing to a bad DIS module. Gonna go ahead and replace it as it looks pretty old and the connector port on the backside is cracked which may or may not have anything to do with it.

Go on E-Bay and search for the "Electrical and Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual" (EVTM) for the Taurus / Sable for the year of your car.

You may have to look over a period of a few weeks, but one will show up. They are in the $20.00 range.

Isolate which cylinder is giving you the miss by removing spark plug wires, one at a time.

Then see if you disturbed any vacuum tubing in the intake area when you ran new wires.

The cracked connector can be very old plastic but, it is also common that there is engine movement from a worn out engine mount. The DIS wiring harness has a little slack but not enough if there is extra movement. The mounts allow for a tiny amount of movement but they degrade and wear over time.
