92 MTX with 109 on the odometer; clutch recently replaced ..... I was pulling out of a side street and pulled a little hard between 1st and 2nd and lost all gears; didn't hear anything 'pop' or 'bang' just a lot of play in the shifter and unable to find a gear.

I coasted into a local parking lot and had AAA tow back to my house. The tow truck driver told me he was able to get the car into neutral but when we tried to get it off the flatbed we couldn't so I had to sit in it and press the clutch in.

Plan is to get it to my mechanic and get it diagnosed - HOWEVER - if its a blown tranny I would need to hustle and find one for him to install because he doesn't like cars hanging around his property.

Any help or areas to check prior to getting it over to his house would be great so I don't have to tow it over and back while I locate a MTX.

Thanks Reags

You have to look at the linkage and the connection from the stick to the tranny to determine if the failure is internal or just unable to move in and out of gears from shifter mechanism. If you need a used replacement they are available but chances are you will need it shipped in. look on the web for salvage yard bots like http://www.car-part.com/ or others on the internet you can hunt down. Some of those will list info like where the unit is located sometimes mileage and condition, contact numbers etc. They list them under both rod and cable shifter separately. The transmission is the same. Someone can chime in if there are any connection differences to be aware of

I had the same problem on mine. I have a cable shifter, but I had a link fail in the shifter box and at the transmission at the same time. SHOSource has replacements and they are made of metal, not the crappy plastic Ford used.

If you didn't break the rod itself, but parts on it, you may be able to fix it using the parts on the Shosource site. If not, post in the Want to Buy section for a rod shifter.

Someone might be able to give better help with some good pics. It all depends where/what broke. Close pics at the break and others to orient where the break on the shifter is located.

Mine was broke when I got it right where the mounting plate for the shifter attaches to the rod. I just welded it back up and went on my way. It's been fine ever since. Although I'm not that aggressive with it either.

Depending on where yours broke it might be easier and cheaper to have someone weld it back together.

Finally got under the car and this is what I have (as suspected) - broken rod ..... I have my feelers out on the 'wanted to buy' forum and have a couple SHO brothers helping.

Looks pretty rusted. I don't think welding that is an option.
