Ok, heres the deal my tranny blew so i bought my friends 93 atx to put the tranny in my 93 atx for 800 dollars because he backed it into a tree and the whole rear end is messed up so anyway heres the deal. My friends car has under 100 thousand on the clock 99 something i believe, the tranny leaks but the transmission shop said it would most likely just be replacing the transmission seals. It shifts fine sounds good, but it has a God awful smoke that pours out of the hood after being run to the point where the secondaries open up. The mechanic ran a compression test and it wasnt good so i think its fried O rings. Remember all i am using is the tranny do you think i should go ahead and do this? Also while the tranny is being taken out my dad is talking about having the gaskets and seals replaced on the entire engine what else should i get done that would make my engine run better and make less of a hassle in the long run maintanance wise?

I second the rear main seal, by O-rings I think you mean piston rings? put new axle seals in the transmission as well. other recommended seals to replace on the engine would be the cam seals, front crank seal (AKA front timing seal) valve cover gaskets, and plug well seals. all the later items you can do later after the trans is in.

Thanks to both of you, but yes i do mean piston rings. When the mechanic said low compression i thought piston rings. But my reall question do you think the tranny is in bad condition or do you think it will be ok?

While the trannies out, I'd definately freshen it up as well. 93 trannies have a 97% failure rate. Don't wanna be pulling it out again in the next couple of thousand miles.

are you doing the work yourself? or is a shop pulling the transmission... this makes a difference....... if a shop is doing it then just have them change the rear main engine seal..... if your **** all the work reply back as I have some more better ideas that are time consuming but worth the effort while the engine bay has some more space with the tranny gone.....

I would like to know where the transmission is leaking from. If it is leaking from the front seal ( where the engine and transmission bolt up ) I would pass. Although it may just need a seal, there is a good chance that the transmission may not be working well, causing the torque converter to overheat and melt the seal. That is a common reason for a front seal to leak. If it is just an axle seal, and you think you can save some other parts from the car, 800 may not be a bad deal. However, to me. That seems high for a 100k used transmission... You can buy a running 93ATX for that.
