 I have been keeping an eye on the 98. I had the small pin hole on the trans line. I knew it was leaking. I drive the car around town back and forth to to work. No more than 15 miles at a time. I added some Mercon V 3 weeks ago. Well, my daughter took the car to Columbus and didn't make it. About 2 hours into the drive -- no movement. Engine running and in gear. AAA came and towed it. Transmission burned up. My guess is hole finally became a gusher. Well I couldn't do anything so I ended up paying for a rebuild. Of course a new trans cooler and line. It was a AAA recommended shop. 12 month unlimited mile warranty. Looks like I will continue to get on this forum for at least another 12 months!!!

I had an 80 Chev truck and broke a tranny line, had an extra quart of tranny fluid that got me off the highway onto a side road. Arranged to get to an Autoparts store and got 2 gallons of tranny fluid and some neopreme hose. Cut the line, installed the hose, clamped it down and refilled the tranny. It was right outside a truck stop with a **********, but I was too busy to go in.
Truck started up, moved OK and I never had an issue with it, even though I use it to launch and recover a 20 foot boat.
I don't know if I was lucky or not, but I had no ill effects from running out of tranny fluid.

I was always told if the transmission starts slipping, check the level and add if needed. I wish the car would have broken down in town and not 2 hours away. I had no way to confirm if the transmission was burnt. I had a pretty good hunch that it was. 151,000 miles. My 1998 mustang gt manual has 150,000 and it doesn't like to shift in Reverse. I will be shopping around for transmission rebuild place in T-town.

:sun: Finally had a chance to check out the Taurus. My daughter came into town this weekend. From the outside and underside of the car it looks no different, but it ran great. Shifter smooth and of course I pushed it a little harder than normal. 12 month unlimited warranty. Car looks good but still needs AC. I did pull off the passenger rear side running board since it was barely fastened. Nothing there. Rust ate all the metal. Mark

Very common problem on eastern driven SHOs and many cars in general. When I was doing my full body restoration a couple of years ago, that was the main area of serious work required. There are 3 layers that are supposed to be in there, and you can buy the interesting formed support ladder one from Ford's OOP car parts service system, I forget its actual name, for a very good price and hugely less than it would cost to actually build the part. By the way, if one side is gone, the other is likely not in great shape either.
