hey guys, I have recently purchased a junk yard transmission and the owner said it was a rod shifter. I don't really know if it came with a rod shifter. My question is can you mate a gen 2 tranny that originally came with a rod with a cable shifter? The reason why I'm asking is that the shifting feels no different.

Also, the tranny is a pos and it started out not going into second or fourth half the time. Now it goes into second but still only half into fourth. It feels as if it is but when you let off the clutch and push on the gas it kinda shoots into neurtal. Any ideas? maybe bad syncros? I also heard here in the forum that the syncros are discontinued, is this true? thanks, you guys are the best! thumbs_u

There have been lots of people that have switched from a cable shifter to a rod shifter so I'm sure you could reverse it if need be.

Does the tranmission go into reverse alright? I'm guessing that there may be something binding inside the transmisison if the cables and other exterior linkage look ok. With the cables unhooked from the transmission does the shifter move back easy? I don't think it would be a synchro - 1&2 share a synchro and 3&4 share one. If it's alright in 1st and 3rd that means its something else that is common between those gears that aren't working. I had a similar problem when my pressure plate broke - a spring hit the case where the shift rail slides internally inside and distorted it. Mine would not go into 1st, 3rd or 5th but the other gears were ok. I would check the outside of your case (mostly on the bottom) and make sure it has not been dropped or damaged from abuse. Hope this info helps you out.

That info is incredibly helpful. A tech. at ford said that my clutch was pretty much toast and the pressure plate was eaten up. Do you think this could be the problem?

If it's kicking out of gear, most certainly.
