for a few years now I have had issues with my VSS (vehicle speed sensor) intermitenly dropping out. but I have never been able to diagnose it because it would start working again by the time I got home. Well since the new tranny it does now work at all now. does anyone have a flow chart to trouble shoot VSS issues?

O/D light flashing (will pull codes tonight)

transmission O/D button unresponsive (may be due to VSS issues)

manual shifting will only command second gear or drive. the 1 position does nothing most of the time but will sometimes (very rare) let me run out first gear.

I am not super savy when it comes to wiring issues but this needs to be fixed fast if there is any hope of getting it to the convention.

I am so frustrated with this car I as strongly considering cutting a fuel line just to get the satisfaction of watching it burn to the ground.

1. Check to make sure the gear on the VSS isnt cracked/broken.
2. Double/triple check the jumper harness from the VSS to near the rear O2 sensor connector, make sure its clean, not broken.. etc...

The trans o/d button should be unrelated to any vss issue - nearly always is the wire inside the shifter that is broken or connector come off. Simple, but challenging to fix.

Your manual shifting symptoms suggest a trans solenoid issue, which should show up in the codes when you pull them.

the sensor was installed new with my last transmission last june. visually it looked fine when I installed the transmission. It is cannot be seen now that it is in the car. before I posted this thread I removed that whore of a connector near the rear o2 to inspect and clean but still no VSS signal.

I am really hoping that it is not a solenoid issue because it will run all 4 gears some of the time. it does not always go into first when at a stop and will not let me select first manually.

I really need a flow chart to diagnose this pig.

ok KOEO code list

511 "EEC processor ROM test failure."
519 "PSPS circuit open."
551 " IAS circuit failure"
558 "EVR circuit failure."
565 "CANP solenoid circuit failure."

*511 I always assumed was due to the tweecer
*519 I can't find the connector that fits the rack honest I spent like 30 min
*551 honestly I am not sure what this is. Idle air solenoid? my idle is all over when i first start the car. I just assumed it was that way because I never tuned the car after installing the cams.
*558 EGR Vacuum Regulator solenoid = evr Not sure why it is failing but it is blocked off anyway.
*565 charcoal canister was removed to fit turbo piping and air filter.

problem no VSS signal. here is what I got so far.

Turn meter on

test meter

this is a old VSS I had laying around from over 3 years ago. all data says the following
Is resistance between 190 and 250 ohms?
the meter is showing a near short correct? in other words a bad sensor.

this is the VSS I just removed from the car and is about a year old. This also shows the same thing as the last sensor. does this mean I have two bad sensors in my possession?

PCM harness pin 3 and pin 6
41933544

again PCM harness pin 3 and pin 6. the other side of the harness is disconnected so shouldn't the meter show nothing or open circuit?

this is what alldata has to say.

  • Key "OFF".
  • Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) . Inspect for damaged or pushed out pins, corrosion, loose wires, etc. Service as necessary.
  • Install breakout box, PCM disconnected.
  • Disconnect Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) .
  • Measure resistance between test pin 3 at the breakout box and VSS (+) circuit at the VSS vehicle harness connector.
  • Measure resistance between test pin 6 at the breakout box and VSS (-) circuit at the VSS vehicle harness connector.
  • Is each resistance less than 5.0 ohms?
Yes -- Go to DP3. See: DP3 - Check VSS Signal Harness For Shorts to Power or Ground
No -- Service open circuit. Remove breakout box. Reconnect all components. Repeat test step DP1 drive cycle to verify elimination of Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) or drive complaint. See: DP1 - Complete VSS Drive Cycle
