Ok I think Ive found the source of my transmission leak but wanted to run it by everyone in case im missing something. Its a 93 ATX. Transmission was rebuilt at 116,000 now have 142,000. Ive been having smoke roll off my cats for a little while but now its leaking faster. Lost a quart in about a week. Its on the passenger side seems to be in the output shaft seal area. It has covered everything in fluid. I wiped everything down and tightened the pan up to make sure that wasnt it. Took it to town and back and had quite a bit of fluid dripping off down below the seal. Only thing is the axle itself really isnt that wet. Just kinda caked with dirt. Things above the shaft are wet also. Is there anything else above the shaft that would leak down this way or is the axle probably just flinging it up there? I am sure it is tranny fluid cause its nice and red and i lost a quart. I could see the VSS through the wheel well and it was dry up there. Any advice would be appreciated. Autozone said they had the seal for 2.99. Sound right?

yep, sounds like one of your axle seals bit the dust.

I dont know about the ATX, but replacing the seals on a MTX is a pain.
Not the actual replacing of the seals, but all the labor involved to get there. You have to move quite a bit of items in order to get the axles out.

Good luck, and be sure to keep that tranny fluid topped off until you get it fixed. Dont want to make one little problem into one big expensive one!

Thanks for the response. Its sitting in my dads garage til i get it fixed. Sure is nice having a dad that is a mechanic. Lots of tools to use. Ive pulled many halfshafts in my time so shouldnt be a big deal. Only problem i ever have on the SHO is getting that darn ball joint to pop out. Should be easier than the head gaskets i spent all last weekend on for my 90 tbird.

If all you are worried about is the ball joint, then you will do just fine.

Soak well with PB blaster (assuming the dust boot is intact), remove the pinch bolt.

I use a cold chisel and a hammer to spread the joint a tad from the inside.

Then insert a large pry bar (2 foot minimum) thru the control arm/ tension strut/subframe triangle from the top front, and pry down. POP

Just be sure to protect the ball joint with a rag or something, it always wants to get torn up by the knuckle!
