Hello, I have a '95 ATX and currently working with limited funds.
Surely not the best combination for owning a SHO, but problem still remains.
I have been doing ALOT of searches on the internet.....I was unable to find what I am looking for.
I am looking for a list of the swappable transmission for the '95 SHO ATX.
I have found that the basics of the trans were the same for the Sables and Windstars and even a few Continentals.
Is there a chart that lists the compatabilty?
The local yard sells FWD auto trans' for less $100 and they have a few Windstars but only 1 beat up old '93 SHO ATX. Sables are in abundance.
I am un-sure if I have the AX4S-AX4N. I need to pop off the tire and check....however I think you can find out on the door info....code "L" is the AX4S and code "X" is the AX4N.
A rebuild in a local shop has been priced out from $1000-1500 for back to stock. I would rather not sell my soul, and cannot even find a likely buyer for it. (Please do not edit this post Mr./Mrs. moderators....I am not selling my soul on these forums)
This car is a very nice car and IS worth the effort to repair. Body is almost perfect....over 201,000 miles on the current transmission. Not too bad for any car much less a SHO. Interior is in good shape. Dirty carpet though.
I am willing do the work on this project myself and I want the car running. I just cannot afford a re-build. I DO NOT have the skills needed to re-build myself. I am willing to re-build an engine....but I know I am outta my backyard mechanics ability on this project.
So does anyone happen to know what SPECIFIC transmission are likely to work...or can you point me in the right direction?
Any help is much appreciated.
I want to keep the whole project down to a reasonable amount.
BTW the current trans works fine.....alll through 1st gear where it stays. Otherwise car shifts fine. I just cannot go faster than 50 MPH, ever.
Fluid was cooked shortly after I bought it. I drained and put in a fresh filter. All to no avail.
Any information please feel free to reply to this thread or email me at [email protected] most preferred call my at 248 506 0298 (providing I pay Sprint the money I owe them ASAP)

Any 93-95 SHO tranny will do, 93 being the weakest. Others will not work or not work long. A reg taurus tranny will work but for a very short time.

I remember reading about a guy who made a SHO motor fit his Topaz and I know some guy made one fit a Windstar transmission.....And reading the info about the trans itself....they are the same as far as most parts lits....I do know I cannot make a base work as they are way too weak.
The Ford Windstar had about 200 HP in the V-6 package so I was going along those lines.
I will look into talking to a trans shop and seeing what they have to say about it all.

The AX4S used in ALL V6 SHO's is unique to the SHO. There are a couple of other trannys that will bolt up and work, but it's an awful lot of effort since all Ford AXOD-based trannys are weak to start with, and a non-SHO tranny will probably only last a couple thousand miles.

Better bet is to post a WTB thread for a SHO tranny, there has to be someone in your area with one for short $$$. You can also check http://www.car-part.com which lets you search your local recyclers.

If you look hard enough, you can probably find a whole parts car for a couple hundred bucks that was wrecked, put the tranny in your own car then sell off the rest of the parts and end up making a profit on the whole thing.

I know of a car very local in a yard I can get the trans w/warranty for only 100 bucks. within my budget.....but if it don't work....then I am screwed. That was kinda what I was wanting to know though.
Thanks for the help though.

A non-SHO transmission is not for a SHO. I do not even think it would work. Not even a little. If you have to buy a used transmission, save your pennies for a SHO transmission. The TC is different on a non-SHO the valve body is different, there are differences in the internals. It is not going to work.
