I just picked up a spare mtx of unknown background or quality.

is there a way to visually inspect the blocking rings by just pulling off the end cover, or do I need to disassemble the main shaft to know if they are okay?

I see some wear on the gear teeth (mostly on 4th) but otherwise it looks good visually. the roller bearings and races look decent. it is reportedly good, but the guy I picked it up from has been known to 'forget' to mention some issues in the past, so I want to be sure its good before I install it anywhere.....

any input is appreciated.

You really neet to take it completely apart to do a through inspection. I alway's do this. Get the diff roll pins changed out, and I also recomend getting the diff welded by a forum member that offer's this service.
