2,000 miles after I just stuck this sucker in here, while acceleration through an intersection, suddenly hear an aweful grinding noise meanwhile I lost all power to the wheels. The noise sounds as if a axle is stripped out inside the trans, but I have no speedo reading when I press the gas in gear, just a god aweful noise. I can put the shifter in all gears, but I get the same noise in all of the gears. Is there a ring gear inside thats stripped out or what could it be??? I am almost sure its tranny related, not axles. HELP FAST! who cares about the heater core.!@

Is the car a 5spd? If it is it may be spider gear/diff related :(
If it's an ATX all i can say is headbang

It IS your axle, believe me! Talking from experience! Tearing down the trans and putting another differential in and slap it all back together to find out it's the same problem and could've been fixed within 30 minutes...something I'll never forget. If it was a spider, side, or pinion gear you would've heard of this problem from others that have lotsa more power than us in their SHO's. Jack it up and put it in 1st then let it idle. Both tires will/should be moving, block one off or get someone to hold it then give it some gas pretty hard and quick. Try both sides and find out which axle it is. When it grinds, it's the axle not being held of which is ruinned. You must give the gas pretty quick and hard as there's no weight on the tire and therefor if you go into the gas slowly, it'll work. Mine happened to be the passenger side. The axles can be found for $59.99 each w/Lifetime warranty from either O'Reilly's or Autozone. Heard bad about NAPA's axles.

Good Luck! And sorry for packing it up in one big paragraph...I'm in a rush. wink

it could be a axle, but then why is speedo not working? If that were true even if the tranny was spinning and axle was not it would give a reading. Correct?

I would pull the speedo gear out and see if it is in one piece, granted I can't see it makin a ton of noise, but possible, its just hardened plastic.

Can you tell me why mine didn't show the speedo move either? If it was the differential, wouldn't it be spinning to cause the internals in the diff to grind? Yes, and therefor it should cause the speedo to move too. So if you say it's not the axle, you might as well rule out the differential internals and that being said leaves it to the bearings (which I doubt) or the clutch down on the rivets. I've seen a trans rebuild because of this and it turned out to be the clutch. Either way, it's your axle or clutch disc. And I assume your axle. Did you hear a pop right before it began to grind? It sounds 'exactly' like a diff pin busting.

Edit: The reason it doesn't show the speedo move is because he mentioned he tried in all gears. eek! Tell me if you speedo moves when the SHO is working and in 4th gear on take off. Believe me if you had that grind, you wouldn't leave it in any gear long enough to even see if it moves the speedo. Put it in 1st gear and rev it to 3-4k rpms and I bet you'll get a reading. It's not going to hurt what's already ruinned and the best way to find out. wink

Guess I should have been more clear, its an ATX, all gears meaning 1,2,D, and reverse. Its not axle related, I am sure of that. And if it was an axle yes the speedo would read, thats why I mentioned it doesnt read. If it was axle the differential would still spin therefore giving you a speed read out. Its something further up, I jacked the front up, and put it in gear, both wheels spin, but grinding still. Theres some drive gear, or input shaft thats stripped not putting power to the side gears, thus no power to the axles. Well MINIMAL power, bucause they will SLOWLY spin when off the ground, but nothing when on the ground. any other ideas?

SHOSPD,

Did this happen suddenly and/or without warning? Does the grinding noise sound anything like a belt that's slipping and rubbing on something? Unfortunately, your situation sounds identical to the problem I experienced not more than a month ago. And if I'm right, then you're looking at no less than a full rebuild, my friend.

Here's my original post for help:

And here's my follow-up thread (also linked by TYSHO):

I'm really sorry to hear about this, SHOSPD. Please keep us posted on what you find and lemme know if you need any input on rebuild options. I was forced to scour the SHOland for rebuild tips and options just recently and have a lot of information the would be very helpful should you need a rebuild.

Oh, and FWIW, I finally obtained the old broken parts from my tranny guy last week and will post picures of them as soon as I get a chance.
