Ok so my transmission is shot in my 98 SHO. I am getting conflicting answers about whether or not a 96 SHO transmission will fit it. They are both AX4N transmissions. I can get one pretty cheap from the 96 if it will fit my 98. Could there be an electrical hookup difference. I hope someone can help as I am unsure on what I need to do.

All '96-'99 SHO trannys are 100% interchangeable.

The only difference is which TCC solenoid must be installed. For '96 and '97 cars, the TCC solenoid with the white connector must be installed, for '98 and '99 cars, the TCC solenoid with the blue connector must be installed.

Thanks and that's what I was thinking after researching all day. Some say it may even be the solenoid itself giving me problems. This is what it does. I put it in gear and have to rev the engine before it will go. Then it rattles and sounds horrible. When I have to stop it kicks out of gear and I have to rev the engine to get it going again. Once it gets going it doesn't slip at all. A few months back I had the fluid changed and it drove great for a couple months before it started acting up again. That is why I think it may just be the solenoid. I LOVE MY SHO and I am not ready to put her out to pasture and this transmission I can get is super cheap and was hoping it would fit since I got laid off and can't afford to shell out too much right now.

Ok guys, I'm new to the forum and just picked up a 1999 SHO with the front pump seal leaking on the transmission. I've started looking for a used transmission, but i've had 2 salvage yards tell me that the transmission HAS to come out of a 1999. I see a couple guys on here say that 1996-1999 will interchange. One of the yards that's telling me 1999 only, has a 1997, so if the 1997 will fit my 99 why would they tell me it won't?

Because it wont fit... Unless you swap the TCC solenoid for one from a 98-99 AX4N

Salvage yards can only go by the info in Hollander which they get from the manufacturers.

Interchanging transmissions between 96/97's and 98/99's isn't "officially" supported, but neither is putting '96+ brakes on the '89-'95 cars, or putting 24/26mm sway bars in a V8 car, etc. Doesn't mean it's not possible, just ask the '08 tow mirrors on my '01 Super Duty...

Ok guys, I've run across a great deal on a used 1998 SHO trans. The way it sounds it should be a direct bolt in for my 1999? Sorry to be a pain, I've been a mechanic my whole life, but I'm new to the whole SHO thing. Just don't want to waste money on a trans that I can't put in. Of course there is always reselling the trans for a profit.

Thanks in advance for the help.
