Oil Change MTX

I know we have gone over this many times, but it still is a huge help for new owners. It should make a big difference in the way an MTX shifts.

Go here on Google and download.

"SHO Transaxle Drain Plug Installation"

Install the drain plug, then refill the transmission with about three quarts of good automatic transmission fluid. The fill plug is the 3/8 ratchet drive pipe plug about mid way up the transmission side facing the radiator.

Drive it a couple of weeks or about 50 miles.

Drain again and then refill with about three quarts of quality synthetic ATF.

Do it again in 30, 000 or so miles.

How did you drain it? Unless you drilled a drain plug in it, you will not get 3 quarts out. Since reverse does not have sycronizers like all of the other gears, the new, smoother fluid will not 'cushion' your reverse engagement as much. If you shift into second before going in reverse, it should help a bit.

This...I was going to post the same thing, but wasn't sure about the second then reverse thing.

Alternative is to let the transmission spin down for a few seconds as well.

Hi new member here and I had to join since I was puzzled by the transmission and how to drain the fluid.

I've read up on the vacuum method of sucking out old fluid and that's fine but, this is going to sound ridiculous, but I cannot for the life of me find the fill plug, I know that it's a 3/8" square hole but standing in front of the car and looking into the engine I can't see it at all!

Are there any pictures? Also since I don't have a shop vac, I was considering just a hand pump to suck the old fluid out, has anyone tried this? Thanks guys!

Hi, I had to join the forum since my new used 89 SHO has been puzzling me as to where the fill plug location is. Noob question but I cannot for the life of me see it when looking down through the engine compartment! Where is it? All I know is that it's a 3/8" plug. Is it accessible with a wrench from above or do I have to lift the car to get to the plug? I'm probably going to try and pump as much of the fluid out as I can as I'm not too fond of drilling into a transmission. Thanks for any help guys!

I had the same problem years ago with my old car. The reverse would always grind. Its a sign that your clutch isnt disengaging 100%. I changed my clutch and throwout berring and the reverse grinding stopped.

i have the same problem when i sift into reverse it grinds as well i just don't have the time or the money to put a clutch in what other thing could i do..

and i have yet to lift my car up to check it but do i need to make my own drain plug.

and last they say to adjust my clutch by lifting up on my clutch pedal and push down but that doesn't do anything. is there another way to do it like bleed it?

To shift into reverse, I usually go 1st, 2nd, then reverse. No grinding. As stated above, there is no synchro for reverse, so you have to have it in another gear prior to going to reverse. I doubt it is your clutch.
