So. Im fully aware that im car ******** and thats all but clear now. I have no idea why but i i started pulling the trans case thinking it was the bell housing. Pops came out and gave me a hand thinking i knew what i was doing. I didn't. Pried it apart 1 inch and saw what looked like the differential. At this point i freaked. I put most all the bolts back in and pulled the case back by torquing them. I did a criss cross pattern. Tighten one a bit. Then tighten one on the opposite side of the case. etc. Looked like it for the most part sealed fine and i was in the clear. I was wrong.

Came out today to pull the axles and unbolt the bell housing and found this.

The transmission is now off the motor and up on the counter. I have no idea where to go from here. I did want to pull the diff to have it welded. but i and no one i know of has anyone idea how to assemble a transmission.

Ive become completely discouraged and now realize i probably took on too big a project with alot less help then i thought i'd have. Maybe just the bearing is bad? It isnt split but it looks crooked. If its just the bearing could i just buy a new case? Is the case weldable? Any help is appreciated. Feel free to flame at will, it was a dumb mistake that could have been avoided, and i'll be paying for it. Thanks.

Just get a replacement trans and continue what you were doing. No project is too big really. My clutch replacement ended up being in a complete front end rebuild. Including brakes, mounts, clutch, flywheel, ceramic tob, all new bushings, control arms, sway bar links, all new fluids, rod bearings, new struts, mounts, springs. Wow.... so don't get discouraged, just fix it and make it better.

good luck

btw, you can search for my thread and find the cracked diff!

So its no good just finding a case? Finding a tranny is easier said then done. Espicially in MN. I looked in the classifieds here and in the parts car sections for reference as to how much one would cost and didnt find any for sale at all.

What about having the case welded?
Jeebus, the bearing cup is GONE, you would never get that case welded and everything lined up properly or get that bearing to ride right ever again. Gawd knows what kind of massive damage you did to the rest of the internals.

Consider that tranny trash. Throw it away. Start over, and forget welding the diff.

Don't throw the tranny away. Some of us FI guys can use it.

Some of the bearings (maybe all of them) could be shot but the gears and the shafts should be OK.

Plus , this half of the tranny is ultra rare to find alone (IF everything else is salvagable which I doupt)

Best bet is another tranny to avoid problems , but keep the internals gears , that could come handy one day.

Wha? I have one for sale in the classifieds right now...been there since last week. Not one bite. Unfortunately Toolman and I have struck a deal.

Thanks for all the responses. I asked about welding it as i watched a Ibuddy weld up an integra case. But i assumed this case is broken in way too many spots. I will just be looking for another transmision. But why give up on welding the diff? I understand theres some work involved in getting it in and out, perhaps i dont know how all thats involved. It just seems like with the transmission out and on the counter that it'd really be a waste to not atleast put new roll pins in the trans i pick up.

Some believe it will cause stress to the internals (specially bearings) because when you weld stuff on the diff , it becomes unbalanced.

I welded mine , and a bunch of people did too , an so far so good. (Yea I lost reverse but it was not because of that , it was my fault.)

I dont say it doesnt put stress in the internals , but in my case I'd rather change a couple bearing once in awhile rather than splitting the tranny in half.

My 2 cents.
