It just seems like with the transmission out and on the counter that it'd really be a waste to not at least put new roll pins in the trans i pick up.
Just tighten up the case bolts a bit more and the diff will probably pop right out onto the bench.

I suspect you could save this if you could find a backside case half, but as someone pointed out, they're rare. I doubt there's any damage or distortion to the bell housing end, as this end is very stiff and is heavily ribbed in the clutch housing. Inspect the bearings, you may have Brinelled the races, but I'd be surprised if there's any damage. The end of the backside case is very thin and weak, which is why it broke out.

Man, don't any of you give me any crap about over-preloading the shaft bearings. ;)

Everything was going so well up to this point. Not one stubborn bolt. In auto collision i had to drop the motor and trans from an old cutlass cierra and put it back in. It had to run once put back in as well. Once the motor and trans were on the floor i was in uncharted territory. Ive done things like alternators, waterpumps, struts, even a clutch on a carb'd 2 liter something stang. But that was ALOT easier. So much shit crammed into this thing.

Dmoo is kind enough to give up a spare transmission and sell it to me if i can't get this fixed. But like anyone else if i could keep a couple bucks in my pocket i sure wouldnt turn it down.

The general word at first is that id need a new tranny. Now a couple people think this one can be salvaged. I also assumed it'd be hard to find the case as so many are wrecked by ejecting diff pins and unintelligent people like myself.

How would i be able to tell if the guts are still ok? A local might borrow me a quiafe install vid and as long as i could take the internals of the transaxle out as a whole for the most part, i think its doable. I can take more detailed pics if need be.

I have some extra cases, from some of my many busted transaxles. Let me see what I have laying around.

That would be huge. Granted the insides are ok. I dont expect hand outs and would pay plus ship etc.

Actually, that's not the half that's wrecked by ejecting a diff pin. I have a case half from one that ejected the diff pin that I would let go cheap. PM me if interested...

I've personally thrown away at least 30 MTX trannys in better shape than that one.

Anyway, you really have to ask yourself if after this debacle, you're really up to trying to replace a case half and get the transmission back together properly. I really, truly, believe that you're better off just finding another good complete tranny (have Beth go through it if it would make you feel better), and just install it and drive.

I kind of Assumed as much. Was just wishful thinking. I was hoping all the guts would come out as a whole and i could just swap casings. Would replacing the case be any more difficult then pulling the differential? I really do wanna get it welded, and if it just gives me a reason to tear into it then fine.

That depends on how much actual disassemble and reassemble there would be. From your response im guessing that there would be a considerable amount.

As much as id love to this was obviously an unexpected problem and i didnt have any money set aside for this. Ofcourse i have a small emergency fund but its just that, an emergence fund. Id imagine her time isn't cheap, much less the shipping there and back. I appreciate the encouragement and advice.

in that link i posted it shows exactly how to disassemble............and yes it is alot of work and no its not very easy.........but it is doable......my first tranny job was a MTX-IV

My first transmission job was also on my SHO, though I have had more transfer cases and differentials apart (intentionally and unintentionally) than I could shake a baby at.

It was indeed a lot of work, but I had some great guidance and knew when to call in a heavy hitter, professional transmission guy.

IMHO, there's nothing wrong with just replacing the broken half of the case, but make sure you can get your thrust washer settings right. When I do it with transfer cases, I use the trust washer that came from the new case half. If it's not there, I use the old one and pray. So far I have been lucky.

If you want to read about my transmission experience, go here:

http://www.shoforum.com/showthread.php?t=83043

and for all the pics and diagrams and stuff I used, follow this:

http://www.abusivemotorsports.com/troy/SHO/Tranny/

The other thing I recommend is to read everything you can (every thread in here that mentions transmission) and then understand why it broke and know what to do to put it back together without it happening again. Transmission repair is pretty complex, but it's not rocket surgery.

Good luck and keep us informed.

from one brother to another brother, from one car guy to another :) if you are serious about doing this and in MY humble opinion, i wouldnt even try to salvage that one, because if you DO somehow get it welded etc, the kind of power you want to put in it brett, could just end up chipping it up or something 1000 miles down the road...than you would have to pull ALL this all over again...trust me...been there, dont take risks, it may be more money now, but it will be worth it.

What I would do, which helps you win in both ways, is ****** take the WHOLE thing apart man, you have the manual, take it apart, and put it back together (what you can) and do it over again...learn.....and in that fact as your learning, you also get to keep the parts so you can either A. Sell them, or B. use them on future issues. Thats just the pistons two cents ;-)

busted tranny

I have a 92, picked up a tranny out of a 89, my intent was to put the 89 in the 92,. I thought I had tranny issues, it seems that it was the bushings to the k-frame (AKA engine cradle). it is a wonder that I wasn't dragging the cradle when I drove it.

could be talked out of the tranny. let me know, I am new to the technical details of SHO's, also wanted the older tranny due to brass synch's vs the plastic ones on the newer ford trannys. older trannys are mazda based.

all this tech. info is second hand thru non-SHO owners

Don't throw the tranny away. Some of us FI guys can use it.

X2!! Never throw MTX4 parts away. Soon enough we will be "hog tradin" the parts back and forth.

If you want to throw the broken half out, that's fine. Do NOT throw out all the gears, shafts, syncro's, blocking rings, etc...!!!

Thanks for the offer, but this thread is somewhat old, not sure who resurrected it. I just ended up sending two broken trans to biz to make one Frankenstein trans.
