tranny woes (diff or cv shaft?)

here's the deal:
my CV shaft (so i thought ), would click when going around corners. this wasnt just a little click, it was a CRACK. i thought it was the drivers side CV joint. tonight i was getting on the freeway and it finally let loose. The car would go into gear, but when you let the clutch out the car wouldnt drive, the speedometer still works, but the tranny has no output, neither of the CV shafts spins, it just cracks and makes horrible noises. another thing i noticed was that when i was towing it back home, the speedometer still worked. So the CV shaft still has a connection to the diff, but the diff wont output power to the cv shafts. Did i manage do break another differential? or could it still be CV joint related? please help

From the sound of the clack, you have already diagnosed the probable source of the failure. If that is the case, the outer CV joint boot will likely be torn badly.
