Ok i have some tranny issues w/ my 94 ATX and i need some thoughts and maybe some prices :(

Heres the situation:

Okay the car was shifting REALLY REALLY hard so a friend suggested that i get the tranny flushed (the fluid was burninated REALLY bad too). So i go to this new place that opened in the area that i live trying to give them some business and see how their service was. The whole thing cost me about 80 dollars to have done, and took about 45 minutes. I left and the car shifted better then it did when i bought it so im like "aww man this is great" it gave her a new set of legs...come to find out one of those legs was about to fall of.

A couple of days passed and then i was goin home at 11:40 PM and i go to get in my car and i put it in reverse to back out of the spot and as i go to give it gas it just revs up and nothing happens. Im like okay...ill try it again, but still got the same results. a person i was giving a ride home suggested that i check the tranny fluid and when the car was finally warm we looked at it and it was hardly even on the dipstick. There were no fluid leaks anywhere wether it be the car or the pavement. So when i went back to the place to talk to them about it they said that they would do nothing about it citing "clutch piston" problems in tauri or something like that, and then they showed us the machine that did it for us and proceeded to tell me that they put 12 quarts of fluid in it :)bs:) SO they wouldnt do anything about it, and i couldnt afford to take them to court about it. So here i am...one SHO w/out reverse sitting in my g-mas yard looking absolutely GORGEOUS but i cant drive the thing w/out being very careful about where i go.

To recap:

Shift car into reverse...can FEEL it switch to reverse...but when i give it gas i get nothing (and it seems as if the car has something holding the rpms back so they dont climb real fast, and of course they wont go over 4k but thats expected)

thoughts...comments...prices for trannies from parts cars...anything?

I’m not an atx expert but from what I’ve heard the "tranny flush" can do more harm than good as I guess you have found out. ATX trannys can be found for cheap. I saw a 3.2 engine and atx tranny together starting at $200 on ebay the other day. Just start calling junk yards in your area, that’s the best advice I can give.

Before replacing the tranny I would stop at the parts store and pick up some M/D III and add until it is in the full zone (with tranny at operating temperature and measuring after adding 1/2 qt at a time), then see if that helps. It will only be about $10 for a couple quarts of fluid and worth a shot before replacing the whole tranny.

Definitely try getting the fluid level up to see if there is a difference. You might also need a filter -- a flush can stir up contaminents that get caught in the filter and impede flow which is why I always recommend a filter change after a flush. But...

Unfortunately, the most likely scenario is that your tranny was probably already on the way out. Hard shifting is almost always a mechanical problem and not a fluid problem, and I probably wouldn't have recommended flushing the fluid. Once mechanical problems present themselves, changing the fluid can often do more harm than good. (Please note that I said once mechanical problems present themselves -- I am not one of those nuts who thinks changing the fluid on a high-mile tranny is a bad idea; only when there are already problems is it a bad idea.)

sounds like the shop forgot to plug something back in. when you hear it 'click' into reverse, can you feel the initial surge as the output shaft moves against the TQ? And, more importantly, does it have the forward gears? The taurii do have problems with clutch pistons... the whole tranny has issues, but that's one of its weakest points. It's quite possible that the reverse clutch piston just died... although I suspect sudden lack of fluid may have had something to do with it. Have you put more fluid in it yourself? AFAIK, the tranny can hold 12 qts W/O flushing the TQ, and 17 with. I might be wrong on this. Actually, I'm probably wrong, but those are the numbers popping up in my head.

If they used the typical tranny flush system they didnt have to disconnect any connectors other than tranny lines.I would say tranny just lost reverse.Probably on its way out.But how much of this hard shifting did you tell them about? I have been in the automotive buisness for years and rarely does a buisness want to go to court.Your tranny fluid was low and that may have caused your reverse to go out.Did they see it that fluid was low when you brought it back to them? They should have test driving it enough to eliminate clutch posistion excuse if they were aware of this problem. Its cheap to take someone to small claims court.Chances are theyll settle before it gets that far but spending 30-50 bucks in filing fees might get you somewhere. They cant prove how many quarts they put in.There is proof it was low and you lost reverse. They didnt tell you to come back in a day to recheck fluids because of clutch posistion. And who would suggest doing a tranny flush to a car thats shifting hard. All shops know it could do more bad then good.Write a letter to their corporate office.I wouldnt mention the hard shifting if i didnt have to but lets hope they do something to fix it.They may have only been partially at fault but should meet you maybe half way with something.Good luck with that.Oh ya full capacity of tranny and t.q is 12 quarts.
