I have noticed that over the past month when I start my 97 SHO it takes a little longer for the tranny to engage. The car shifts fine once underway. The past several days there has been a definite 2~3 second delay before being able to get underway.
TODAY…it would not move, period. I also noticed that the battery light came on when I revved the engine @ 2~2.5k to see if it would at least crawl a little (it did not).
Is the tranny toast or should I look for some thing a little less daunting to repair as the culprit?
Thanks in advance,
wj

thanks for that,
the fluid is full up and clean
the fact that each time after driving and leaving parked overnight (recently) it took longer and longer to engage...makes me think that something was building to this.
I only have an basic OBDll reader and there are no codes.
I can upgrade my ScanTool software for $100 to read the drivetrain codes but the truth is that if the tranny needs the valve body...or servos...or anything other than a filter serviced then I need to consider the total cost, at this point I think the 100 would be better spent getting the car re aligned after the tranny replacement...
I'll not be dropping the cradle but rather need to hire someone.
I find that I am $$$ challenged at the moment and need to make informed decisions as I can only justify so much expense.

Check to see if the fluid is overfull. That is a sign of pump, or torque converter failure.

Check running of course. If the fluid is the same level off or on, you have your answer.

after a bit of soul searching and some help from Spridget I've arranged to have the tranny rebuilt. I guess this investment will push me into replacing the struts in the near future and then I'll use/keep this car for another several years.
thank you everyone

My tranny 'rebuild' is scheduled to be done early next week. I live quite a ways from the transmission shop and am hoping that there will be no issues with the repair. If there are (slipping, late or early shift points, hard or too soft shift points, etc) any issues, is there any adjustment they can perform via software or will they need to pull the valves body and other parts?
I am not referring to using an aftermarket tuner but rather some sort of adjustment sw a tranny shop would normally have on site.
thanks for any responses

I feel your pain... I only have 66K on mine.... It use to slip a little in the heat, but stopped having the problem for about a year. Started having the same problems last week. Went to bring it down to the local transmission shop. Didnt make it all the way. Torque converter went, and took the pump with it. About 2k in damage (having whole transmission rebuilt). Hope to get it back by end of week.

I hope you do better than I did.
The tranny shop delivered the car to me. I used to have a slight miss at idle, it was so severe when they returned the car that I literally couldn't drive it as delivered.
They have tested and tested and even did a smoke test. They basically found 8 small leaks and I hope that when all of the hoses etc are replaced it will run again.
Time will tell.
