Well I was looking at a SHO tonight and the tranny was grinding when you put it in reverse and it was having an issue starting smelt a bit rich but it didn't have a CEL although the light could be out when trying to start it would do a popping sound like the car was out of time. any ideas

just so you know all gen 1's (89-91) and the first year of the gen 2's (92) all came manual. 93-95's you could get both mtx and atx.

just an fyi :)

Thanx I think I already figured out the hard starting issue is the cam sensor cause the tach doesn't work either.

then the grinding in reverse i would have to say is a common issue with the mtx when first going into reverse aslong as its not grinding while driving in reverse you should be ok

Ok so the Cam shaft sensor is a normal problem and the tranny I don't have to worry about as long as it doesn't grind while driving? It grinds no matter what going into reverse no matter if the car is completely stopped or not I'm just used to the fact that if it grinds it's bad.

cam sensor is normal. try putting it into either 1st or 3rd before going to reverse. and i think the other way is if you leave it in neutral for like 3 seconds or something then put it into reverse you won't grind either.

If you are grinding going into reverse the clutch is not getting completely released. Causes are worn clutch, worn fingers on the pressure plate, stretched or misadjusted clutch cable, worn out throw out bearing. I would price the car as if the clutch needs to be replaced. The only time my car grinded going into reverse at a stop was for one of the conditions I listed above.

It may be worthwhile to point out that there are now young drivers among us that have never driven a tranny with a non-sychronized reverse gear.

More details on the grinding please.

Ok well the grinding it starts to go into gear and will go in but it grinds as if you were to put a tranny in reverse while still moving forward.

All of the manual transmission SHOs that I have bought have needed a clutch within a year. And this one sounds no different.
They have a constantly running throw out bearing (some call it the release bearing), that manages to wear the fingers on the pressure plate, while wearing itself out. Eventually the disc drags as it is not releasing and it shows up in reverse in the beginning.
Is the bite point of the clutch down in the carpet?
Allow $300.00 for the clutch and $500.00 for the install ...... if your subframe bushing bolts come out nicely and your exhaust studs don't break off.

When you first hit the key before you go to start position, you should see the check engine light, along with all the others.

Have you put it into a drive gear or two before you attempt to put it into reverse? Non synchro rev. gear means you have to shift it around with the clutch depressed and the car not moving and not go straight into reverse. Try 3rd, 4th, reverse.

No I haven't tried putting it in gear I should be able to change the clutch myself. I didn't drive the car myself.

Right. What I'm saying is that while running at a stop: depress clutch, move the stick into third, fourth and then reverse without letting out the clutch and see if it doesn't grind and engages the reverse gear normally.

I have no idea on the plugs and wires. I will try the clutch trick tomorrow when I go and "pick it up."
