Did they actually remove the tranny, or weld it in place? If they just welded it in the car, there's a good chance they sealed it up nicely with chunks from the hole inside which are now rattling around inside doing all sorts of bad things.

Ya they never dropped the tranny out to weld the hole. the hole was at the very bottom of the tranny. if my flywheel went would that cause the car to not start and would the clutch seem weird.

The simple answer is yes. The starter turns the flywheel to start the car and the clutch resides on the flywheel. Both your problems could just be your flywheel... just my $.02

What was the nature of the accident you were in? You just hear a whine when you turn the key to start? Could be a bad starter and or teeth missing off of the flywheel. How does the clutch feel wierd? Really loose, really tight, etc..? How familiar with the sho is the shop that did the work? I believe you can remove the dust cover that is pinched between the trans and the motor so you can look and see if the starter is engaging the flywheel and if the flywheel looks ok. Good luck with it.

I lost control on a turn going a lil fast. spun out once took out 2 mail boxes six trash barrels, 2 recycling bins. the shop that works on my car knows the car very well i always do business with this man. the clutch at first was stuck it was close to the floor. then i pulled it up and it kinda clicked and now it kind of feels normal. its very hard to describe.

Go ask your town for a new tranny, either that or go to the weldshop and tell them they owe you a new or to fix what they broke

If you pull off the starter (just a few wires and bolts thumb ) you can see the flywheel. But not all of it. I dont' know how you could turn it to see if all the teeth are good.

Motto of this story, "lil fast" is usually not good. frown

First of all do you like things that start with the letter 'B'? You have boxes, bins and barrels...J/K. If it feels normal now then your "Self-adjusting clutch cable" just re-adjusted. It should be fine. The flywheel is attached to the crankshaft. When the starter is cranked the teeth on the starter turn the flywheel which starts the motor. If the teeth on either the flywheel or the starter are gone then that would cause your problem. See if that is your problem by removing the starter. When you get that out check the teeth on it. If they look good and undamaged then look in the hole with a flashlight and see if any of the teeth on the flywheel are gone or damaged. If neither are damaged then come back and we'll go from there. Also while you have it out you should take your starter up to the local parts store and have them check it to make sure it is still functioning properly. Better safe than sorry!

This sounds like a really unique problem (don't we all get the unique ones? slap )

What I would do in this situation, is jack the car up (make sure you set the e-brake, and chock the back wheels), remove the starter (im sure you can do a search and find a write-up if you do not know how to do this), inspect starter gear teeth, if they are ok the starter may still be shot but, next check the flywheel teeth, go get a friend, look through the hole the starter just came out, and with the one tire off the ground and the car in 5th gear, have your helper spin the tire while you are looking at the flywheel teeth with a flashlight, just make him go slow, and check for missing/chipped/cracked teeth on the flywheel.

If all the teeth check out ok, go get the starter tested or just buy a new one. Rebuilt ones are relativly cheap with a core, and Brand new starters go for like $170 i think. If you are missing teeth or the flywheel is/got somehow damaged in your accident then guess what?

Of course if you do not have the tools/skills to perform these procedures then find a mechanic you are comfortable with to check this problem out. But doing it yourself sure beats the tow charge....

I just saw your post KM92SHO and im just trying to help thumb

Call the FD and your insurance company and start filing claims.

You're looking at at least ~$700 (best-case scenario) to as much as ~$1500 (worse-case scenario). You're looking at a minimum of $500 in New England just to R&R (remove and reinstall) the tranny. Then the clutch can be inspected to see if that's the problem. If it is, you might be able to find a cheap clutch in the $200 range. If the tranny needs to be opened up (which I would do regardless), you just spent another couple hundred $$$, plus the cost of repairs. If the tranny can't be repaired, now you're in the market for a used tranny in the $400-$800 range, plus you may still have to replace the clutch.

From experience, I'd say your tranny is toast. If you're not going to be able to recover any $$$ from the FD or your insurance co., you have to consider that it may not be worth fixing the car and instead sell it for scrap. It's usually not worth throwing $1500 into a $300 car.

Oh, and you should really take the advice of others and STOP HIJACKING OTHER PEOPLE'S THREADS! Most people on this forum don't spend every waking minute of every day reading and replying to messages, and might even be less likely to offer advice to someone begging for help all over in other people's threads. Relax and be patient.
