Hey guys,
Out of not being able to buy anything, my aunt and uncle are giving me their decently nice 1994 Taurus Sho ATX. It has already had a new tranny dropped in once, but I was told I should get a tranny cooler just to keep this one from doing the same thing for awhile. What cooler do you recommend? I'm looking to go decently cheap (even though they are not that much anyway) and is there enough room in these things to mount it in front of the radiator? Any other tips?

Also, I'm sure it will need at least the 60/100k servicing done (valve stuff, tune up, etc.). Is that easy to do yourself? I have experience with cars to a point, just not these SHOs. Let me know. Thanks guys. I'm happy to be here.

Korey

They already have a tranny cooler mounted in front, it sits on the bottom. However, you can buy a bigger one. Do a search and you'll get some results on which ones are preferred, they don't cost much.

As far as 60k's go, yes it's easy to do if you've worked on other cars. I find the SHO to be the easiest all around compared to other cars.

The stock cooler is a very good one! All aluminium, eficient style & size. I just finished adding another stock one on top, just stacked them. I did revise attachment by flipping original upside down to optimize location to frt vents. Check Ebay there is one their now.

could you link that one on ebay? I can't find it? Also, if I go bigger, what size do you recommend?

Welcome to the SHOforum, You have a 94 ATX like mine, However I have a large trans cooler with a 10" electric fan on it that I have wired to a switch so that I can turn the fan on when it gets hot. But that is only truly effective if you have a trans temp gauge. but really any decently sized tranny cooler will help out, The stock tranny cooler has paint on it from the body being painted so I think that would trap in a small ammount of heat and it is rather dense and doesnt allow much airflow between the fins...IDK but I got mine from summit (www.summitracing.com)

The stock cooler does not have body paint, its just painted black like all coolers. They flow well & I found it easier to mount like the stock one. An aftermarket unit is made to attach by long xmas trees into the AC condencer which may not be the best place. Up to you as I had a stocker from a parts car.
And TySHO I believe he was asking me about the VA Tools as I have a paid classified ad for them! RCM is NOT a paid Forum sponsor & he does not have the lowest prices on everythig thou Russ does carry a nice selection of SHO parts. My VA tools are better & cheaper-$50 shipped. I also have the cam position tool-$30 shipped & a shim kit which is free to use if you buy the tools. I also have the FORD Rotunda ESS kit tools for rent if you need them for a valve stem seal replacement ect...

Thanks, guys, I really appreciate the replies, when I get the car, I'll do a visual inspection on it and when I get it home for spring break in a couple weeks, I might do an upper on it and leave the front until May since I'm at college right now. Bill, I will seriously consider the offer. So, is the $50 for rent or buy of the VA tools? And if I buy those, I can rent the shim kit for free? Sorry, guys, I'm new and it takes me a little bit to catch on.

I agree about the GEN2 ATX cooler and is what I have on my GEN 3. You can also improve the flow by replacing the factory steel lines and fittings with full flow 3/8" brass hose barbs (drilled out a bit) and 3/8" tranny hose.
