Tonight I was driving my car and the TQ convertor was locked up and operating fine. It was quite cold out as well. I had been cruising at 60mph barely on the gas for about 30 minutes. Well all of a sudden the TQ convertor unlocked and didnt lock back up. Well I floored the car and took it up to about 80mph then brought it back down. When i got back on the gas at 60mph the TQ convertor locked up again. So what I am wondering is could it be that the tranny fluid just got too cold from the constant low load driving at 60mph in the very cold weather or do I have a problem here. 1993 ATX SHO

V-6&V-8,

60 MPH for 30 minutes - that trans is not cold!

The torque converter is activated by a solenoid (servo) in the valve body. The connection sticks up through the trans. Check the connection for any corrosion.

If that is not the problem, then check the wire for continuity. Check the service manual for the tests proceedure on the servo and the system.

I have a new tranny with about 4,000 miles on it, and I just replaced the last one at about 23,000 miles of use. I do have a Ted B LPM installed. I havent been able to recreate the problem as of yet, and with about 19,000miles and 2 years of warrenty Ill wait for it to do the problem again before i bring it in.

I personally think that if your oil control block (I do not remember the exact point at which the car directs oil to either the cooler or through the radiator then back to the trans) was bad, and it was continuously running the oil through your cooler, it might get cooler than the (I think) 120 degree fluid temperature it requires to lock up. Does it take a long time when starting from cold before it locks up? I know mine was quirky, when it was in its cold start cycle it would take 1/2 an hour of driving before it would lock up, but if I drove for ten minutes, stopped and restarted the car, it was fine, locked up normally. However, that was all computer programming. Did they replace the lockup solenoid when they rebuilt the trans? Sounds like a connection issue, I agree with rangerj. Mine would only lock up once in a blue moon. Cleaned the plug on the top of the trans, and it locked up fine after that.

And then, it got rear ended by a New Beetle.

AutoSHO,
What and where is this plug on top of the tranny that you can clean to help the TC lock up? Thanx
