Forgive me, I have not searched this subject out on the forum but I had a quick question. Is it normal for the torque converter to un-lock in third gear, at any speed or rpm?? I have been noticing this since I purchased the car and then tonight, I jumped on the gas...ran through second real strong...hit third and the car reved up then "bogged" back to normal. I assume that is the torque converter. Anyway, just curious if this is normal or not. Thanks for the input!

Oh yeah, side note: my CEL is on and I had autozone pull the codes. The gent was less then helpful and quickly stated some sort of exhaust issue. Not O2's but something else. didn't make any sense...anyone heard of this one?? Car runs fine!

Thanks again!

Under normal acceleration, I don't think so. Have you checke dfluid level and condition? Sounds like it's slipping.

What was the code 'number'?

EGR?

The tranny issue could be slippage but it sounds like normal TC lock/ul but without hearing/seeing... not sure

The TC unlocking and locking will happen in 3rd but is much more noticeable in 4th.

What was the code? Probably DPFE sensor to take a guess.

Differential Pressure Feedback EGR. Or lack of exhaust gas flow through the EGR valve.

ya i barely notice it in 3rd but if you stomp on it in 4th it'll rev to like 5k then come down for a nice pull to 130+mph :D

In my 98 the TC will lock in third if you are on it. I think that is what you are feeling. Feel free to drive down to Cincinnati and I will look at it for you.

If you do a quarter mile run, you'll notice that the torque convertor won't lock until the tach is at about 4800 rpm in 3rd gear. It locks up and the tach drops to about 4200 rpm and it feels like the car is bogging. That's normal operation.
