I am pulling my trans to do a seal replacement. While I have it out, will replacing the Torque converter fix my shutter problem, or is this a problem inside the transmission that needs to be addressed? What TC should I go with? Cheaper will be better, but I don't want to have the same problem I have now...

Thanks for the advice!

Most, "shuttering" problems are directly realated to the Torque Converter lock up. The TC locks up, but slightly slips, causing the shuttering you are feeling. A new, or rebuilt TC SHOuld fix you up.

A new or rebuilt TC will fix the problem, but if you don't want to replace it again in a couple of years, you should take it to a local trans shop and have all the vanes brazed. Stock they only braze every other one or so and they ultimately come loose. Mine sounded like a box of marbles bouncing around in there.
I believe many others on this list have also had the brass bushing replaced with something more substantial.

I was charged just under $400 for the mods on my TC...

So that's the source of the "marble" or "rattling" sound many folks hear from their trannys?

ES,
Just curious, did you have the vanes brazed by hand, or did you buy a torque converter that was manufactured like that?

Indeed, the marbles in a tin can sound was prevelent on my '99 a few months ago before I sent it to Doug for a new trans. :O It was drivable but would pop in and out of gear as well as slip like crazy when it was in gear. ;/

When I got a better TC they used my core to rebuild. Cut it in half then brazed all the fins. Better bushing and clutch too. $350 through www.bulkparts.com a couple of years ago.
