I bought a 90' SHO a week ago and have been very happy with it except for a few things. First, my gas gage, tach, and blower don't work. When I bought the car, I was told that the alternator was dead and I was wondering if the alternator is the source of my problems or if it could be something else? Also, this morning I went out to my garage only to find a big puddle(2 or 3 quarts worth) of tranny fluid and I was wondering how do you change the tranny gasket on these cars and how difficult is it. I hope I don't sound like I'm rambling but I am somewhat ****** at my at car after seeing that tranny fluid.Any help is greatly appriciated and needed. Thanks, Brian

well.... first off 2 or 3 quarts on the ground would mean that your tranny is for all means and purposes dry.... you need to find out what seal it is leaking from....

The fluid seems to have come from the driverside close to the cvd so I am guessing the rear seal.

Brian,

Welcome to the Forum and the joys of SHO ownership!

Do not drive the car until the leak has been repaired. If you do, you will toast the transmission very quickly.

Check the power steering fluid level. If a rack line decides to puke, it will empty all the ATF from the PS system onto the floor in the same spot. If the PS system is still full, your transmisstion axle seal (probably) has failed. The worst case would be a cracked transmission case. Only a good visual inspection will pinpoint the source of the leak.

The seal cost about 3-4 bucks at AutoZone. In order to replace it, the driver's side CV/axle must be pulled and inspected for wear. The new seal is then installed and the axle and suspension is reassembled. The tranny is then refilled with ATF.

Let me know if you need help, I'm in Florissant.

FWIW, this needs moved to the Engine and Driveline forum...

Steve

Thank you for the help on the tranny but do you have any ideas on my interior problems. Also, do you happen to know when Gateway closes for the season. Thanks for the help

As far as the electrical problems, I'd have to say that the multiple issues would make me check the fuse panel. I've never had those exact issues and don't have much in the way of technical expertise when it comes to diagnosing electrical problems in vehicles. Best starting point would be to drop down the fuse panel and see if any of them need to be replaced.

If you are referring to the Gateway Raceway, you can get their annual schedule from www.gatewayraceway.com

You sure are an optimist!! :D

The fuel guage, tach, and the blower are probably all different problemsa s they do not share a single common power source.

The tach might be the cam sensor, the DIS, a wiring fault, or the tach itself.

The fuel guage, most likely is the sender in the tank. I know mine is goofy as it likes to read a max full tank for awhile every time I start the car. After a few minutes it will drop down to the correct indication (usually).

The blower is supplied by Fuse 9, which is hot in the RUN position. For a manual climate control system, the power then goes through the AC/heater function switch (must not be in the OFF position) to the motor. The return side of the motor is either connected directly to ground for HIGH operation, or through the resistor pack for the lower speeds. If you have a voltmeter, it should be straight-forward to troubleshoot.

The fuel guage and the tach are supplied by fuse 18, which also supplies the temp guage, door ajar light, seat belt light, brake warning light, and several more which you didn't mention as malfunctioning.

Good luck, feel free to ask any questions about the car you may have.

Thanks for the help.I now believe I found the source for at least two of my problems. First, my driver's-side halfshaft is where the tranny fluid came from and the #18 was shot so I replaced that.I have the electronic climate control so I believe it is the blower motor because whenever I turn on the blower I hear the solenoid(sp?) click but no blower. Also, It is difficult to replace the halfshaft? Thanks,Brian

Blower motor is not bad, you can get to it through the glove box. Just dont scrap you wrist on the metal glove box mounting frame. I STILL have a scar from one I change in '94 on my old '88 Sable. eek!

If the CV boots are not torn and the CV joints have not been making any clicking noise in slow speed turns, they are probably okay. You will just need to pull the driver's side halfshaft from the tranny in order to inspect it and to replace the seal. There was a discussion last week in the Engine and Driveline section about replacing these seals. Look for a thread started by sdpatt titled "MTX Halfshaft Seal Replacement" from three or four days ago.

The clicking noise is probably your Blower Control Module (BCM), especially if it coming from the area directly behind the glove box. There was a very good post back in August about a module repair done by one of the forum members. Do a SEARCH in this section of the forum for "Blower Control Module".
