what kinda tires would you guys recommend? right now im running aquatread 3's even tho it hardly ever rains here (came with the car) im looking for performance tires with pretty decent tread life (like 15-20K miles) but also want some performance/grip to them.

Tires for what? (16-17-18 inch?)

Well it doesnt really matter, but for long tread life and good performance you should look into Toyo's or Nitto.

I'd recommend stock size, the Pirelli P8000 Vizola, or Bridgestone Potenza RE730. For 17" applications, I'd also stay with the Bridgestone. I have 225-55-VR16 P6000 Sport Veloce tires on my car right now and they handling/traction is great! By some greater power, I even made it through the snow/ice storm this past thursday. Maybe getting the tires free makes the performance seem better.

I swear by BF-Goodrich Comp T/A VR4s. I will never buy another tire, they can go form one extreme to the other, from the terrible lake effect snow to the 70+ days in Jan. I have never heard a bad thing about them from anyone.

Dunlop SP5000's go one extreme to the other also! Awesome grip for an all season.

Have you ever seen 225's on the slicers? they are too wide. See how much the tire sticks out over the rim edge. That's not good for handling. Better to get a 215 width with a stiffer sidewall.

I have 225/50/ZR16 Dunlop SP8000's on my slicers and I absolutely love them. The sidewall doesn't stick out from the rim any more than usual. I have had BFG's and Nitto's and neither one compared IMO. They are also quite a bit cheaper($86) than other brands. When I go to 18's I am going to try Kumho's. I have heard from a couple of friends that they are great.

If you go to a 225/50 that's a different story. You are drastically decreasing the profile. That helps in that there is less rubber to flex in the sidewall. But, 225/55 or even 225/60 would be too much. I have a set of 16x7 wheels with 225/50 R1 racing rubber. With less rotational mass(less distance and weight between hub and tread) you will probably notice a much quicker jump off the line. But it does hurt you in the top end.

I recently put 225/55/ZR16 Kumho Escta Supras on my stock slicers on the red 95, and they fit fine, and the overall diameter is just slightly smaller than the 215/60.
They handle great and don't bulge too much. Possibly some other 225/55 may be to wide, since I've heard the Kumho's may be slightly narrower than the competition. These will run about $90 a tire.

I would be willing to bet that if someone ever took out a SHO and timed them with a set of 215/60 on the slicers, they would get a better time than if they had identical tires in the 225/55 size on those slicers. There are probably many good tires with stiff sidewalls in 225/55 that will handle better than stock tires in 215/60. However, all things being equal, you'd be better off getting wider wheels if you're serious about getting better handling.

You might check out the new Yokohama SVSdb, especially 225-60-16, high speed rating tire with excellent wet and dry traction along with a very quiet ride, good wear, cool looking tread too, for about $106.00 ea at Discount Tire. A 225 tire is not much wider than the 215, really.I mean, is about a quarter of an inch wider on either side going to bulge on the 6" rim? Give me a break! And the 225 Yokohama has superior characteristics to their 215, only about $2.00 ea diffence in price!

With 220 hp you need grip. There's a reason the SHO came with V rated rubber, Z rated in the later models. Kumho makes a great autocross tire but their street tires are average. Nittos are also an average tire. The Firestone SZ-50, Dunlop 8000, Bridgestone RE730, and Yokohama AVS are good sticky tires. You should get 15k-20k from them. The best thing to do is put some 4 for $100 tires on your SHO and go to your favorite curves, record your speed and handling feel of the car. Then put some of these Z rated tires on and do the same thing. Sticky rubber makes your car safer, the ABS will not kick in as soon, steering is sharper, and you can accelerate without wheelspin, etc.

In my experience Nittos are junk. I had a pair of 450s on my RX-7 and they squealed like pigs.

If you're going for the maximum grip in the summer, I'd pick up a set of SO-3s.
