I now know that I'm getting some new tires as a gift, but I have to choose between Dunlop or Cooper, as I can get a discount on them through others. So what should I get? Cobra's I've heard are only a "performance" tire.

All-seasons? Summer Tires? What kind of performance are you after? I personally prefer Dunlops over Coopers.
I'm looking for a good handling tire, one that doesn't feel sloppy in a turn. I need all-seasons, but I prefer a bias towards performance. I checked on the Dunlop SP5000 ones, and one dealer says they don't make them anymore.

half-way there, I think.
I have the SP8000's - very, very nice tire. Excellent turn in feel and unbelievable grip. They have outlasted my Yokohama A520's. As far as being all-season - don't know yet but they are a summer tire.

P.S. What's up with your site - I wanted to download the 40meg version of the SHO movie??

The server is STILL down, and I'm getting mad at it! By this Saturday, I'll have room on another server, where you can get the movies. Here's the link, try it Saturday afternoon:

I won't have the movies actually up though until Saturday. Sorry about that, as I wish it were back up too!

For what its worth I've had the Dunlop 5000's for about a year (winter/summer) and I've liked them.
I'd get them again and they're not real expensive....not for nothing but Tirerack still had them I believe a few weeks ago.
Good luck.

I have Dunlop SP 4000 tires on my 17" spring/summer/fall wheels.
I tell you, they grip the road amazingly. Very quiet tires, too.
And, I even have a thinner than stock tire, at 215/50/17 size.
I am very impressed by them.

How do you like that tire size on your SHO, Mark? When I can afford it I was thinking of putting 215/50-17 Yokohama AVS ES-100 on a set of 17X7 centerline RPM wheels for my 89 MTX. Seems to me a 235 would be too wide for best performance from a 7" rim.

I would stay away from the Cooper's, from a performance point of view. I had 2 of them on the front of my old '91 SHO... VERY sloppy in the turns. The sidewalls were soooo soft, that if I pushed the car side to side( standing outside of it) you could actually SEE the sidewalls moving. And that was with 38 psi...

I'd try to find Dunlop's if that is your only choice...

Where's the poopin' dog????

That was the funniest avatar I've ever seen!

EDIT: Oh, I've never had Coopers so I'll reserve judgement, but I'm not crazy about Dunlops. We Had them (4000 I think) on my wifes Eclipse and while they did handle OK, the tread wear was non existant. You could watch the damn things go bald without even driving it.

Sounds to me like the Dunlops are the one. 91 SHOplus, hopefully the 5000's are better, as they're what I want. But as long as the tires last for a year or so, I should be happy (about 7500 miles a year I drive my SHO, I'd guess).

Rick,

Either the ES-100's or the SO-3's would work well. I just put SO-3's ($158 Discount Tire) on mine, the car with the Centerline's and they grip the road...and look pretty sharp too.

Go here to see them:

I thought it was pretty damn hilarious myself, but some people complained to me that it was rude and disgusting, so I removed it. Oh well :)

I WANTED to put the word "Honda" under it, but my computer skills are horrible :D
