Yes, but a 225/55-16 would be much closer to the correct overall diameter to keep the speedometer accurate. The 225/50-16 size is about 5% shorter than stock and will cause you speedo to read 63 mph at a true 60 mph.

Why not the 225/55-16 size? It is the closest to stock. The 225/60-16 is too large looks like a truck tire. It has a large amount of sidewall to flex. I had some front fender rubbing when I used a set that size.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the stock tire size 215/60/R16? THAT would be the closest to speedometer reading

Closest to what? The indicated speed with the stock tire size or the real measured time to cover a known distance?

When I mention a non-stock tire's speedometer error, I always reference it to the stock tire's size (215/60-16). However, in many over-the-road tests (on long stretches of flat south Texas highway), I have found that the 225/55-16 size comes within measurement uncertainty of the true vehicle speed. In my measurements, that means that an indicated 60mph is within 0.1mph of the true speed when checked against the time it took to cover a measured distance (10 miles).

I found that the stock tire at full tread depth actually made the speedometer on my car read about 1mph below the true speed. When a 225/50-16 makes a 5% (3mph) difference, 0.1mph is quite insignificant.

I'll remind you that I am an engineer and covering long stretches of flat south Texas highways with very little scenery causes you to look for things to do to keep your mind functioning. Sometimes I calculate my car's speed and check it against the speedometer's indicated reading. **** is as **** does.

Just like the fuel gauges, from year to year the speedometer calibration changes. Apparently the '95 models got some wacky speedo calibrations. Not sure what you have.

I run 225/50 tires and would expect 5% difference (3MPH at 60) from stock. However from the factory my '95's speedo reads 2MPH slow already, so it effectively compensates itself out. I verified that the speedo reads about 1MPH high now via the Penna turnpike's friendly radar readouts, as well as using the mile markers on dead-flat dead-straight I80 between Chicago and Ohio.

Engineers on the road are a danger to society apparently - I should keep my eyes on the road and my brain on idle
