please can someone tell me how to check the timing and how to adjust it if needed. the car is acting like it has a dead battery at times when cranking it will cut out then crank fine. I think it is the timing but just got this car 91 mtx plus and havent had to do timing on these motors yet. only on older chevy motors.

also i replaced the starter tonight (brand new) as well and just about every other time it doesnt ingauge just spins. does this need shims? im lost in what to do

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

The ignition timing on the 3.0L and 3.2L SHO engines is fixed at 10 degrees BTDC due to the mounting location of the crankshaft position sensor (CPS or CKP) in respect to the crankshaft and is adjusted only by the EEC through the many sensor inputs and a built in map of parameters.

If the starter just spins, you either have a bad bendix on the replacement starter or missing teeth on the flywheel. You can view the flywheel after removing the starter to check for the missing teeth. If the flywheel teeth are still smiling at you then the starter is faulty.

If the timing belt is off a tooth, you will have terrible performance. Unfortunately, you would have to remove all the timing covers, to physically check the timing of the belt.
