timing belt and tensioner

i just replaced the timing belt in my 93 atx sho, and after starting it is backfiring out os the tailpipe, i know that i installed the belt correctly but i am not sure is i installed the hydraulic tensioner correctly, it seems like the timing is slipping, is there some certain tools i need to install a new timing belt? and does anyone know why the belt would be slipping?

after taking every thing apart again i found that my timing belt marks on the belt are not lined up anymore and that the belt is trying to work itself off of the pulleys, does anyone know what could be causing this?

You didn't install the belt correctly if it has changed timing and working itself off the pulleys. Refer to the SHOtimes.com site for information and pictures on setting up the timing belt on the ATX. Ignore the timing marks on the belt after the engine has turned. Line up the index marks on the pulleys. I have posted the method to verify the timng belt alignment with the removeal of only the upper timing belt cover. Please search in this topic for it.

when i installed the belt i had both cam pulleys and timing marks on the belt lined up with the marks on the back cover, and the bottom pulley and belt were also lined up correctly, i just took every off and turn the motor by hand to get the cam marks back to the top and have found that the timing marks on the belt are about three inches back.

In the upper right-hand part of your screen is a 'search' link. Click that, and try "timing belt alignment" or similar variation as the search string.

i seen in a previous post that SDPATT had said not to loosen the nut in the hydraulic tensioner, well i did when i first was removing parts from my car(did`nt know), so i just tightened it up before installing the belt, could that be why my belt is slipping and if so how do i fix it.

That's your problem. You'll need to track down the ATX timing belt tensioning tool and torque wrench adapter to properly reset the base tension.

will i still be able to use the same belt or should i get a new one, it has about 40,000 miles on it.

The tools are not needed.

I've posted several times on how to set the pre-position on the eccentric roller prior to releasing the tension on the hydraulic tensioner. Start here and follow the other link: http://www.shoforum.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=004749#000003

Remember, the white timing marks are to be ignored once the engine has rotated. They are only important for lining everything up for the very first time.

Make certain that you check out the tensioner fully. I had one last fall that was bad.
