Well, I think 100k on my 14 year old car did it :p

She clicked over 100k today and Ive had a few items decide to die

I need to replace my ECT. (I figure shrug ) She runs cool till I find stop and go traffic, then the temp climbs till Im moving again. And runs nice and cool on the hwy. I checked the fan, ran a couple of jumpers to it and it's working fine... it just doesnt turn on :p (thanks ECT)

Anyhow, what else should I replace while Im in there? I figure I might as well replace the thermostat... but what else?

thanks thumbs_u

Have you tested the fan relay in the ICRM?

If the ECT were a problem, you would also have driveability or fuel economy concerns.

How high does it climb?

With mine, normal running range is near the A-L, the fan comes on normally when the guage reads O-R. Your guage, of course will vary in the exact indication.

More likely the fan relay in the relay module. Start the engine and let it idle. As the temperature rises, the fan should kick on at around the "R" on the gauge (or wherever you are used to hearing it engage). If the temperature rises farther than this, tap the relay box with your hand to determine if the relay can be made to actuate. If you hear it click and the fan energizes, it wasn't the ECT sensor.

Thanks steve and scott... thumbs_u

Ill check the relay as well. The temp never got real high only to the bottom of the N in NORMAL, but prior to yesterday it never, ever got above the M... it just has be worried

The trip home last night (after I posted) it acted like normal again...It never heated up beyond the M. On the hwy it stays between the A and L, then when I get into town it rises to the M, the fan kicked on, and the temp dropped again. So the fan relay might be going bad.

Im I thinking correct that the relay can SLOWLY go bad?

Slap me if Im thinkin crooked... boink :D

OKay! Good call guys!

It is the relay that is going wacky boink

While driving today it decided to play it's game again... I stopped, jumped out, popped the hood, and slapped the relay and what do you know! The fan turned on thumbs_u

Thanks :D

Thats exactly what a bad ECT does. It turns on the fan late and makes the motor run rich. I had the same problem, changed the ETC and everything was fine.
