Thumping noise.

Alright. I'm having a trouble with this random thumping noise.
First off, it does not happen all the time. It just randomly happens sometimes. You can definitely feel it through the floor and hear it. It's coming from passenger side front wheel area.

I changed halfshafts, struts, endlinks, LCAs, outer tie rods, passenger side wheel bearing, and rotors so far. I made sure everything is tight. I also got it aligned, and they did not say anything about inner tie rod or anything.

Thumping noise happens at any speed, but again it doesn't happen all the time. There is squeaking noise all the time tho. I'm assuming the squeaky noise and thumping noise are related since I thought squeaky noise is coming from a warped rotor, but I changed it and noise is still there.

Oh btw, halfshaft is a reman unit. I wonder I got a defected one?
Any idea?

Have you checked your subframe bolts to make sure they're tight? And when you replaced the struts did you replace the mounts? And how about your sway bar bushings?

I haven't check subframe bolts, but I'm pretty sure they are tight cause I have never touched them before. I will check it tho. I replaced struts with used koni + eibach from a SHO guy. He didn't say anything about replacing the mounts so I assume the mounts are good. I didn't change sway bar bushings because I have to drop the subframe. I checked the bushings anyways, and they are still in good condition.

You are assuming a lot there. And you are on the east coast. Do they use salt over there in Mass? If no recall was performed the subframe connections could be rotting out.

Also, check the mounts as they are prone to failure if the car is driven hard.

Washington state.. West coast. No salt here. How do you check the mounts without actually pulling the strut assembly out of the car?

Woah! I coulda swore it said MA on your location! I even looked up the state code to double check!

You can look at them, but I don't know what that'll tell you. I was able to pull mine out of the strut tower with them in the knuckle. Just disconnect the brake line and push the damn knuckle down as hard as you can and it'll come out.

the squeaking and thumping sounds like a strut, spring,strut mount issue, even though they are used they still can be bad

I was able to replicate the noise I heard while driving by hitting the top of the tire pretty hard. I went through a lot of stuff though, like taping the door to see if it was loose, checking all of the panels, the trunk, et cetera.

Hey D.

I would be surprised if it were a front strut mount. Even thought those assemblies were sitting on the shelf for a couple years, they didn't have very many miles on them. You just put them in and there was no indication that the mounts were worn when I looked them over. I'm not saying it isn't possible that a mount is making noise, but I wouldn't go so far as to pull the strut out until you've ruled out the other possibilities like loose subframe bolt, steering rack, tie rods, end links, etc,...

Replace sway bar mounting bushings. May still be something in strut.
