Met a guy at the convention (Jim Davidson) who put an air to oil cooler on his V8. Very good job he did and it got me to thinking.

The V8 has reverse flow cooling, so unlike the V6 the coolant entering the oil cooler is the hottest. Don't know for sure what the diffrence in temperature is. But if the coolant is entering the heads at ~195F and continuing down the cylinders and to the lower part of the block where the oil cooler gets the coolant from it has to be hotter.

Anyways I was thinking of installing the oil cooler from a Crown Vic PI that has it in the lower radiator hose.

I would be interested to know what the temperature difference is myself, but I don't know if anyone would be able to get figures like that.
An oil cooler definitely wouldn't hurt, although in either of the v8's I've had I have never found any burnt oil or sludge when doing a change.

While at the track during the convention the car started leaking oil from the TC inspection port area. But on the 1000 mile/15 hr drive home at ~75-80 mile an hour the car didn't leak any to any degree that was noticable. I'm just guessing it was due to the oil temp getting elevated that aggravated a minor leak.

I haven't taken my car on a track before, but there's no doubt the exit coolant temperature would be even greater on the track. An oil temp guage would be able to tell alot, but would probably be just as easy to say forget it and install an oil cooler.
Although, I believe they do make oil drain plugs with temperature senders built in that are pretty accurate. I would be interested to discover the temperature differences between the 3.0 and 3.4, under both normal and track conditions, and the percent change in oil temp. Not that I'm volunteering. :)
