I just picked up a used set of eibachs for my 94 atx and I want a better stance. I noticed the springs have several "dead coils". I was thinking that hacking one one these out might be the answer...btw I'm running a fresh set of sensa-traks...will this be too much for them?:thankyou:

Your sensa-traks won't last a real long time with the eibach cut. It won't have much travel, and you'll find yourself bottoming the strut out frequently. If your roads are good, it isn't too big a deal.

I'm not saying don't do it, but be aware that the strut longevity and travel length will be compromised.

You can dry removing the tab on the strut that the pinch bolt goes through and lowering the strut in the knuckle a bit. You won't get a whole lot of movement before the spring perch begins rubbing on the tire, but it can help a bit.

Yeah...i figured it would **** them sooner. I'll cut the tabs first as you suggest to see if that gives me the stance I'm after. I live in Brooklyn, NY so good roads...don't exist. lol.

It helps if, when you cut them, you grind the top of the top coil so it is flat with the ground - since you've cut the top [flat] coil, the coil won't seat very well, and if you don't at least round the edges of your cut off, the edge will dig into the rubber spring seat. Parallelerating (YES IT'S A WORD) the top coil will help it sit better in the seat.

IIRC, my springs were never ground flat on the top from the factory and the rubber is molded to fit that extra coil.

The top coil is usually cast to be parallel to the ground to form a (nearly) complete circumferential contact with the mount.

LMAO.

Have you ever worked on your suspension? Most springs (many different cars) that I've changed around have not been machined flat. The coilovers I just installed on the STi are flat, but they take a seat of a flat surface as well.

Cast? Never heard of a cast coil spring before...

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know how springs are made, save it for somebody who's seen a car in the past seven months.

LMAO.

Good God, you know what I meant. I never said the tops of the coils are machined flat, but that the top coil is rolled to be flat to provide maximum contact.

I didn't know what you meant since you were referencing grinding a spring. The angle at which you would have to grind that to make it level would probably give about an inch of flatness.

why does it seem every other thread here in the past week is just full of who is right and who is not! Anyway I have been running eibachs with one dead coil cut on sensatracs for a while now and the stance is great but the ride is a bit bad on some big bumps it always bottoms out. Its still a dd and after a while you will get used to it. I vote do it!
