Hello everyone,
Great site here with lots of useful information. I've been poking around quite a bit and I've got a few questions that hopefully you guys can help me with. I'm considering purchasing either a first or second-generation SHO (preferably a '91, but either way MTX only). I've always loved these cars and would like to have one to tinker with. I am aware of the their 'special' maintenance requirements - the 60,000 mile valve and timing belt services as well as its rod bearing and clutch issues, among other things. These troubles aren't a big deal to me since I'll be doing all the work myself and the car would not be my daily driver. My biggest concern is this, with these cars being out of production for so long and being built in such low numbers to begin with, what's the parts situation like today? Is it likely that my local Ford store or even Autozone will stock parts for these cars, or are they impossible to find? If I need a thermostat or a new synchro for the transmission am I SOL?
Secondly, besides the items I'm already aware of, are there any other 'weak' areas on the car that a potential SHO owner should know about? Lastly, I'd like to build the engine up a little - nothing major - I was thinking maybe upgrade to the 3.2-liter block from a later ATX car and rebuild it so it's like new, and then do a few simple things - clean-up and port-match the intake to the heads, add some long-tube headers and some sort of performance chip. I'd also like to throw in some aftermarket cams for a quick, streetable, reliable and unique ride. Thoughts?
Thanks -
Craig
