Long story, but the bottom line is my friend has come in possession of some engines and one of them looks like a SHO V-8. It's half apart but I think most if not all the parts are there. There is no documentation and I have no idea of the condition.

Is there a way of confirming my suspicion? I believe it to be DOHC 32 valve, but it is defiantly not a 4.6 (I have two of those in my garage)

Is there a way of identifying the transmission? Is it special to the SHO? There are a couple of FWD trans there.

Is the engine worth anything? (If you tell me no, but you will fly across the country to take it off my hands, I might get suspicious)

Thanks

It might be worth something. Are the heads on it or removed? If it was a cam failed car you have to check the pistons and cyl. walls for damage from potentially fragged valves.

Trans should have the imprint of the model on the side.

I have some pictures of a brand new never installed 3.4 v8 if you want to view them. I can upload them to my photobucket upon request.

Is it worth anything? Not much. Unknown mileage lowers value. Half apart? How apart is half apart to you? Had the cams spun?

Too many variables

Well it looks like most of the parts are there, but you can see where the valves kissed the pistons and the cam gear is broken in half. The bootm end might be ok, but the top end messed up. I told my fried he should just scap it.

Slow down on the scrapping part. You already know what is wrong.... it is a cam failure.
If it still spins over, flop it over and check the rear main and one crank throw. These are all aluminum V8's and although few were made.... all of them had problems, so chances are, someone needs a bottom end somewhere.
Valves hitting the piston is not a death sentence. Valves dropping into the cylinder or bending while extended are. Take your clue from the condition of the valves.
