OK. First I want to say that over the weekend I performed the valve adjustment portion of the 60K service. All seemed to go OK, and on the test run the car ran great!

On my way to work this morning, some strange stuff started to happen. CE light would come on, and the tach needle would jump all over the place and then would settle down. The car would run great for a stretch of several miles or so, where I was not shifting of doing hard acceleration. Then the Jumping needle turned into the tach dropping to Zero ad the engine was not firing. Then it would kick back on while driving.

I have a good feeling that this is CPS related, but would like all of your input on this. During the service this weekend, the front end of the motor was not touched at all. However, when the intake was off, the actual CPS connected may have been moved around a bit.

CPS? Maybe just the CPS connector? HELP please! I may not be able to make it back home from work. I would hate to have to live here at work!

Thanks in advance guys.

The CPS itself won`t throw a code, however,my CE light did flash a few times in the month before it went out,so i assume they are related since it never happened again. When the CPS goes like that,it will drop to zero, and jump back up as soon as you can look at it,also causing a quick **** in the ride(no,not you

).Just take a quick look at the connector,it seems easily crushed by the manifold if not careful. You don`t want to tear into it if it`s not necessary.

Greg- Have you taken a quick peak at the connector. It wouldn't surprise me if we crushed it during the intake install, as JT has pointed out. I find it to much of a coincidence that this has happened RIGHT after we did the lash.

I also remeber that some coolant was spilled, I can't recall but did it squirt on the pass side of the engine?

Since the CHECK ENGINE light illuminated, you should check the codes. The EEC is trying to tell you what is having trouble. The CPS can and does set a code. It is the PIP sensor failure as mentioned earlier. There are, however, some modes of failure of the CPS when it does not set a code.

I find it way too coincidental that you are having a problem with the CPS after doing the valve gap adjustment. After checking the codes and finding out what was showing the error, you could disconnect and reconnect the CPS main and ground wire connectors to ensure a better connection.

How secure are the ground connections to the DIS module? Ensure the ground strap is securely attached to the passenger side rear intake bracket and the mounting bolts are tightened to hold the crossover tube to the intake plenums.

The CPS itself is epoxy sealed and really not open to contamination from the coolant. I have seen them fail without any leakage from the water pump weep hole. It is probably more commonly damaged by vibration.

Fixed! Whith the car running I leaned on the intake crossover tube and the car shut down.

Whoa.

I forgot to tighten the intake crossover tube bolts.

You can all call me a Jack Ass now.

At least it was a simple and cheap fix. Thanks for all of your help!

That happens a lot to people

especially the powder coated intakes. You've got to scrape off the powder coating under the bolt in order for the DIS Module to get a ground.
