now i installed my new thermostat, it had a bunch of red gunk on it rtv i think it is as a gasket which i peeled all off and ran it metal to metal. Now its leaking i feel dumb asking but was i supposed to put something between the block and the thermostat housing? if so recomendations on what i should use? on a positive note after doing an almost full top end rebuild it started on the first try minus the whole leaking of some coolant. Thanks for any advice.

Yeah. You need a gasket. They're usually only a few bux at the parts store.. rtv really isn't needed, but its extra insurance if need be.

Seal/gasket whatever.. look on shosource and you'll see. If advance or azone doesn't have it, try rock auto, rcmautomotive or shosource.

There is a round gasket/O ring that goes around the outer diameter of the thermostat itself.

I recomend a little RTV around the perimeter of the thermostat ****** itself.

Do not over torque the nuts or you may break the little studs.
