Is it worth it?
The plan is to prepare a 3.2 for a MTX swap over the winter.
ENGINE:
Disassemble, send in bottom end for cleaning and inspection.
Send heads in for same procedures.
New rings, bearings and gaskets.
Fuel mods and tuning
A basic refresh.
MTX:
Refresh that too, weld some things and shot peen some others.
New clutch (NOS Ford unit) I got cheap.

Heres the kicker: remote turbo attempt will commence after the above is complete. Strings1732 type set up. I'm looking at running 6-8 psi max. I'm not looking to displace any of you FI guys at the track. More of a daily driver.
With the above in mind, will having the pistons treated help keep things civil without spending $800.ish on pistons. I can get it done for around $250. I'm not expecting forged piston performance from the coating, just want to know if it's even worth the $250. or leave them stock.

Any thoughts?

on 6-8 psi I would just run the stock pistons, they are more than strong enough.

Agreed, some guys have ran 12 psi on the stock pistons. No reason to put it into that if you are limiting to 6-8 psi. Spend the money on a twEECer or a good fuel system. Tim just happens to have a good set of injectors and rails in your ballpark in his classifieds post.

Ya I seen that. Bad timing for me, I just bought new suspension and did rod bearings and some other maintenance related stuff. Next on the list is new tires. After that I can start collecting parts.

Good, $250. saved here and there will help my low budget build.

somedude_001 : since your here.... any suggestions on a junk yard OEM turbo that I could keep an eye out for? Read all your stuff by the way.

I don't know what junkyard stuff will have one large enough for the SHO. maybe if you come across a supra or something. have you priced a new T3/T4 unit?

I paid $1200 for my turbo. For the boost you want I would not go nearly as large as I did though. any high end turbo will run about the same as I paid. you can actually get away with a pretty small turbo. a GT30 would have amazing spoolup for a low boost setup.

On to turbo choices.

We have alot of JDM cars running around Vancouver and even here on the island due to our import laws. Import law being, cars 15 years and older can come in to the country.
So we have alot of Skyline GT R's, Aristo's, RX7's, Subbies and so on. The up side is there is alot of turbos and related gear available on Craigslist or at club swap meets. Ive come across all kinds of turbos,,,,,,, mostly not knowing if it was appropriate for the SHO. $1200. for just for the turbo is not in the budget. Its probably going to be a Craigslist item and a rebuild kit.
Examples:
toyota ct26 turbocharger - $150

Garrett TO4B Turbocharger - $300
http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/pts/845284323.html

Garrett T-60 Turbocharger - $225
http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/pts/897176429.html

Good ole 88 thunderbird 2.3l turbo - $80
http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/pts/883964149.html

This stuff comes up all the time. Any ideas on what kind of specs to look for?
