Two reasons for this post --
One, just sharing my experience with Sumitomo tires, and two - to see if anyone follows my reasoning on my judgement of them.

About a year ago I put on a set of Sumi HTR A/S P01's. I knew they were inexpensive, but I didn't think they'd be "cheap". I ran a similar set on my old Turbo Tbird and was happy with them (HTR T4's IIRC).

All new front end parts, and alignment good.

I've put 15k or so on them.

For ~5k I had no complaints. They were a HUGE improvement on the set they replaced.

As miles went by problems started developing. Mainly vibrations most noticeable at interstate speeds, and a lot of road noise. Not just the hum any tire makes, but a cyclical type of noise that doesn't sound right.
I experimented with pressure - no improvement.

I had some subframe issues. Misalignment after A/C shim removal, and left front bushing failure, but replaced the bushing and had it re-aligned before 1k mi passed.

I rotated them, balanced them, nothing improved.

Had the alignment looked at a couple times during this 15k and it was always on the edge, but tech's seemed to think the tires should wear fine. Eventually I drilled the strut towers.

So at this point I'm going on the assumption that these tires just didn't work for this car.

I found a good deal on some Eagle GT's which are now sitting in my basement probably getting installed within the week.

I've always been of the opinion that any reasonable quality tire should run well for 30 or 40k if they're balanced/roatated, suspension/alignment is maintained, and the car's not regularly raced.

Either I'm missing something in the maintenance area, or these tires just suck. Or maybe this car is going to change my opinion on tires in general.

I suspect it is just that the tires suck. Tires remain one of those areas where, unless you go to total extremes, you really do often get what you pay for. Low cost tires produce bad results. Medium price tires get average results. Expensive tires get the best results. Its a generality, of course, but it fits more than it will in most cases.

I hope that's the case.

There were 3 different rebates when I bought these GY's. Ended up paying $84 each, shipped, plus $75 or so for installation.

A lot of tread left on the sumi's too. So I'm optimistic I can get something out of them on CL.

I have the Sumitomo HTR Z III on my car, and used them at VIR. They were great until you got them too hot, at which point they tended to become a bit greasy at their limits.

Don't have any experience with Sumitomo's A/S tires, but to be honest I'm not a huge fan of A/S tires on these cars to begin with.

I have the Yoko Advans and cannot say I am all that hugely happy with them. They are OK, but I will not get them again and will go back to Bridgestone.

Pretty sure thats what I just took off my car. Tires drove great, sidewall was just too short for me. Replaced with Cooper RS3-As. Got a bad tire in the bunch with a pull, need to get it replaced. I really like Cooper but Im not thrilled with these tires yet. Car floats now. When the Sumitomos were on I never had that issue. Hoping they get better after I get some miles on them.

Cant say Im a fan of GY, especially GTs. Only GYs you could GIVE me are Wrangler Radials (funny but true). Keep them rotated, mileage on the GT is 50k. Don't expect that.

I had a set on my 2.0 contour. Ran them for right about 50k. They were dead shot, but I was happy with what I got out of them.
Hopefully I'll see similar results on the SHO.
I don't need or expect 50k, but 15 ain't gonna cut it for my bank acct.

Yea, I had those rock hard HTRZ II's on mine for a couple years for street and track events, they do let you hang the rear out easy later in a session.

I had some eagle gt on my 95 and absolutly loved them. I thought they were great tires. If and when I get my sho running again and I get the money I deffintly would buy another set. They arnt the most expensive but not the cheapest.

I have heard the dsw tires were all around good tires. I believe they were a tire rack #1 pick.
